I thought spheres poof when you cast, what do you do, recast while waiting for the rock to come down?

That's what I do, if there are negative fire and negative magic spheres. If there's a negative asphyxiation sphere, I stick that on as well then time a Nightkiss with the meteor (if the meteor itself doesn't outright kill).

I usually used to vine while waiting for the meteor, since otherwise they just leave. I guess it's different for a SD who can choke, though.

I'm not really sure if you'll regain equillibrium in time to Nightkiss them if you cast spheres as soon as you get equillibrium back.
