Getting acquainted Peter F Hamilton, reading the Commonwealth Series - Pandora's Star & Judas Unchained. Currently on the second book, and I have to say its pretty good if you like hard scifi. MorningLightMountain is awesome on top of chocolate pimpsauce.

Please define this genre? What makes scifi 'hard'?

As I understand it, hard sci-fi is things firmly grounded in extrapolation of current technology and plausible theories.

As Wikipedia puts it:
QUOTE
Hard science fiction, or "hard SF", is characterized by rigorous attention to accurate detail in quantitative sciences, especially physics, astrophysics, and chemistry, or on accurately depicting worlds that more advanced technology may make possible.
Lendren2010-06-03 23:44:01
"Hard" sci-fi is sci-fi that's highly dependent on science and typically on more "realistic" technology. Star Wars is not "hard" because of the mythic elements and the Force, with the sci-fi elements primarily used as methods to advance a story that isn't really about them. Strange Days is "hard" despite the archetypal story elements because it's focused on a realistic exploration of a technology that's at least within the realm of possible extension from current technology.

(Note: I love both of those movies. This isn't a judgment about either.)

If anyone's heard of them, I'm on book 3 of 5 in the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony. Smashing.

I'm currently reading the Dresden Files.

Brave New World by Auldus Huxley
Fight Club by Chuck Palenuek (sp?)
Life of Pi (not sure who the author is)

Just finished Life of Pi last week. Good book.
Author is Yann Martel.

I just finished the last book in the Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix (YA fantasy-ish stuff). The series kind of slumped a little around book 5-6 but the ending was pretty good. His other stuff is great too, I would recommend the Abhorsen series. I like Young Adult fantasy fiction, sue me.

From a more "adult" standpoint, I hope to finally finish Infinite Jest this summer. I read about half of it last summer and ran out of steam. It's awesome, but kind of tiring (and looooooooong). On a similar note I am still in the middle of Anathem.

After I finish all that I might re-read American Gods cause it's my favorite and I haven't in a while. Unless I find something new (which is likely).

Actually I need to get around to House of Leaves again too. And my SO just recommended me Logicomix so there's that...

Oh, I also left off in Gods Behaving Badly, which is fluff, but amusing in a "Greek myth pushed into modern day, with a side of soap opera" kind of way. So I'll probably finish that too.

Not sure how I ended up in the middle of like 5 different books but there it is.

Loved the Abhorsen series. Mean to read his other stuff, but haven't been able to find them all.

I hope to continue the Redwall series. Loved the first one.
Need to get the two latest Fate of the Jedi books.
A series by Angie Sage. First book is called Magyk,
This series. Childish but fun.
Finished a book called Breakfast with Buddha. Good read, but I didn't like the ending.
Read on.
I have more, but I can't remember them all.

Ahh, great series, although it has been about a decade and a half since I first read them. I got up to Outcast of Redwall.

I did buy a new one a couple of years ago though, The Taggerung and although I enjoyed it, it didn't ignite any desire to buy the other new ones.
Neos2010-06-04 01:55:58
Only read the first, since I've yet to get the second and I don't want to skip any book in the series.
Diamondais2010-06-04 02:00:36
When my summer classes finish, I get to finish reading the follow:

Shake Hands with the Devil
Inkheart
Brisingr
The first Midkemia series
and many others I've started that I can't think of the names
Neos2010-06-04 02:09:29
Brisingr: Read sometime last year. good book, long but good.
Inkheart: Started. then lose the book at school and never got back to it.
Actually got into Midkemia from reading the graphic novel versions of Magician.
Forgot all about this series.

Well, I have like eight books on the go right now because I pick them up and put them down as I get busy. University is like that!
Sylphas2010-06-04 02:24:03
FINISH THE INKHEART TRILOGY.
Ileein2010-06-04 12:38:54
Oh, I love the Abhorsen series. I understand he's coming out with a new one at some point? Or was that just pointless speculation?
Anumi2010-06-04 13:19:43
My understanding is that there is to be a prequel, and possibly a sequel or at least a sequel "of sorts"... to which, SQUEE. Next year though. To which, BOO.
Bhiele2010-08-07 20:09:23
I just read Marie Antoinette by Antonia Fraser. Loved it!
The White Queen by Phillipa Gregory
The Reckoning Sharon Penman
The Princes in the Tower Alison Weir

(anyone else detect a pattern?)
Bhiele2010-08-07 20:26:17
Someone please delete this ridiculous double posting thing I have going on.

I like that series. The Xanthe (sp?) series is even better.

I can't believe that no one throughout this thread is reading George RR Martin!
Lehki2010-08-07 20:29:22
I've been reading Kate Elliott's Crown of Stars series. Almost halfway through the last book now. =O

I am waiting for A Dance With Dragons.

I am probably going to be waiting for a while.

Yes, but we have the show to look forward to! The guy they cast as Hodor is awesome.
