Personally, my take on it is, if you reference it in an IC manner, it's no longer OOC. It is now part of the game world. The references Cririk makes and the Collectivist Manifesto may be OOC, but when they're used in the IC environment, they then become IC references. We can chuckle at them OOCly and appreciate them as being a part of our world, but to our characters, they're a part of that world alone.
I agree 100% with this.

I have to say that I agree with the comments about the pylons one.
Sure, some of the Cririk doll quotes are ooc but the pylon quote just stands out as and made me think "whut?"
Maybe if you switched out pylons for Mandalas it would work better?

Wow, of all the things we could be complaining about. Are we attempting to fill the time before the new guardians come out with complaining about pointless things or are we just self-actualizing through bitching here?

I'd like it to be next weekend too, I'm unemployed but I'm about to go into exams. Next week I'll be unemployed and on break.

That wasn't the intent of the thread, and I wish everyone didn't get so hung up on the doll example. But there were some very helpful comments, so thanks for those!

The only one that really breaks immersion for me is Weeky Pedia. Even IC, my characters are like "huh, that's an odd name even by Furrikin standards." That said, I don't mind bard songs that reference IRL songs, so long as they're funny and obscure, like "Hey There Kethuru" (yes i know Hey There Delilah isn't exactly obscure, but there is a Hey There Cthulhu, and it is awesome).

No comment about mistress Yoshimi? She's got a black belt in kata you know

I was laughing at that earlier! I just today noticed her name and went "Lololol, oh Yoshimi, don't let the robots eat me!"

I can understand being frustrated at OOC references to an extent, but as I stated earlier, once they've entered the game world, they're part of the game world. They are no longer OOC unless we perceive them to be OOC.

Welcome to the Internets, good sir! Here is your complimentary "Gore Wrought This Hizzouse" bumper sticker.

I'm not bitching about anything. I only care about OOC things in game when it's the actual players ruining my immersion
Lillie2010-06-14 08:01:25
I make very vague and obscure OOC references...which is how I think it should be.
As an example, my most recent one was when Tedd was still Moondancer Champion and he was fooling around with the guild artifact thing (orb of Ellindel or some such) and Lillie panicked and said something to the effect of "Stop messing with that! It's a powerful magical tool! What if you made the moon fall out of the sky? We'd probably only have about three days left until it hit the Basin! No one could stop that from happening in just three days!" I think that's how it should be done.
As for the Cirik doll...lighten up. As has been said...it's meant to be silly.
Sorry if I don't sound like my usual perky self. I should probably go post in General Dissatisfaction.

Lol Zelda reference. See, I have no problem with that, because as soon as your character says it, it's said only in that world. You, as a player, can see the OOC reference, but your character would have no idea that that person was being OOC. If Lillie said something like that to Ongaku, he would just think, "Lol crazy kid talking about the moon falling," not, "What the hell is wrong with you? That doesn't make sense in this world. Why are you talking about the Legend of Zelda that doesn't exist here yet I, for whatever reason, know what it is?"
Urazial2010-06-14 20:15:13
The problem with the sentiment "as soon as your character says it, it's said only in that world" is that it pretty much eliminates the distinctions of OOC and IC. Frankly, it's a cop out. As players we adhere to the parameters of the game world and to an extent, shape it. The slippery slope of thinking that anything said in game can immediately be construed as IC is just bad.
For example, someone says "lol". When questioned, well, the player chooses to say that it's a sentiment of humor or somesuch. Thus, we now have "lol" being a perfectly valid term to use in game when clearly it's not meant to used as anything beyond a cheap, canned emote.

Ah, but you could also look at it like me IRL suddenly saying, "Woozle" and then a co-worker saying, "What?" and me saying, "Yeah, it means awesome."
Because I said that, does it mean that "Woozle" is suddenly an acceptable way to say, "Awesome?" No. But I said it, so it exists. It just exists as a way for my coworkers to think I'm weird.
Same, IMO, with things like "lol" which have an IC explanation = madness. People say it, so it exists, but that doesn't mean that it means anything other than that character is suffering from madness and should be ignored/chastised/killed, depending on his/her audience's persuasion.
