Hey, I was one of the ones bitching out the Ninjakari for trying to pull that a couple years ago, I'm A-OK with putting the lines up ASAP. Just saying, part of the secrecy was on that subject and it wouldn't work anymore.
Someone in Gaudi tried to do that with Paradigmatics, can't remember who and don't really care for those who do so don't bother posting who, even to city mates. They threw fits over us showing others what each thing does, and we were like uh? Do you not want us to defend?

Even if people know what you can do, it does not make you suddenly not mysterious and secretive.
Honestly, it does make them substantially less mysterious.

Hiding skill lines in order to pwn your enemies is such a retarded way to win the e-war though, so I make it a point to put lines up as soon as I can, in order to at the very least thumb my nose at those bastards.
Was I one of those people? I really couldn't tell by your response IG. I really aren't an Illuminati!

It also makes them substantially look more like a douche especially given that it's literally impossible to keep this sort of thing under wraps.
In fact, the envoy system makes it necessary that the envoys be familiar with most, if not all skills.
And nah, Razenth.

Yeah, I'm going to disagree. Uncool to hide lines just to pull off a few kills due to people initially not having lines.

He wasn't talking about pulling off a few kills, he was talking about RP.

It doesn't work regardless. One good raid will net nearly all the lines/functions.
Razenth2010-07-02 05:48:03
Eh nevermind.
Unknown2010-07-02 07:14:46
I'm not saying that keeping affliction lines secret is a good idea, or a viable one. But you can't deny that there's a lot less mystery when the full AB files are freely available to everyone.

Be able to relate to the proctor your understanding of temporal science and a testable premise therein.
What the hell does that even mean? How are you supposed to have a testable theory about temporal science?

Yeah. Seriously.
I mean, I get that it's a science heavy guild and that all the characters in it are supposed to be Lusternia's version of quantum physicists and all.... But folks gotta remember that some of the players aren't all that smart. If someone is trying to make anything mathematical a qualification for getting a guildfavor I will put you on the very short list of people I actually don't like.

Only guild I've ever seen keep a real secret were the Occultist's in Achaea.
No idea if their info is still secret any more, but for a while it was pretty well-guarded.
No idea if their info is still secret any more, but for a while it was pretty well-guarded.
Once the open-ended class system got established, everyone was an Occultist.
And even before that, and before ABs were in Help files, you could find out everything about their skills if you knew where to look (*points at Asara*).
However, even today, there is lots of stuff that they keep only within the House, and I applaud them for that.
It would seem that in order to have a truly secretive guild, the guild advancement system has to be an absolute monster. After all, to graduate novicehood there, you had to read just about all of the histories, and be familiar enough with it to answer questions during your interview. And that is the only reason I waited until the open class system >.>
Shiri2010-07-02 15:32:35
Yeah, now that I remember it, the occultists were a complete bitch to even get GR1 in, much less anything else. Guess I needed better clique access.
Lendren2010-07-02 15:52:20
We would actually be posting the lines on the wiki, if someone would volunteer to organize and maintain the page(s). We'd even be able to get some help from the coders in getting the lines for that purpose. So keeping them secret is simply contrary to the new attitude of IRE and ultimately futile, as far as I understand it, anyway. (Estarra et al. might correct me, though. What I'm saying is just how I understood it from a few months ago but maybe I was wrong or attitudes have changed again since.)

There's more to being mysterious than what your skills can do.
Why not have lots of strange customs and rituals that you do in public but refuse to explain the meaning of when asked? Why not make references when you talk but refuse to elaborate on? Why not put hidden messages (even if they're just made up) in the books you published or in your news postings that are obvious enough to clue someone in that there's something deeper in it, but not exactly what it is.
Skill sets are, IMO, like the least of things that there is to be mysterious about cause, honestly, if even one person in your guild fights other people, your skills are going to get figured out.

The secret to Lusternian science is 'make something up that sounds good.'
For example: "I think time is like a doughnut, and it goes around and around and around and things repeat with slight variations. To test this I could look to see if there are many recorded incidences of similar things happening at multiple times."
And keep in mind that, ICly, you're getting a Bachelor's degree in temporal science. It'd be a little silly if you didn't have to know anything about temporal science for the degree. We'll go easy, though. The thesis-defense-panels are for really high ranks, like Professor of Time and Relative Dimension (a.k.a. TARD).
