See, this is just one example of why I can never have an Institute alt. Time crap makes my head spin.

The secret to Lusternian science is 'make something up that sounds good.'
For example: "I think time is like a doughnut, and it goes around and around and around and things repeat with slight variations. To test this I could look to see if there are many recorded incidences of similar things happening at multiple times."
And keep in mind that, ICly, you're getting a Bachelor's degree in temporal science. It'd be a little silly if you didn't have to know anything about temporal science for the degree. We'll go easy, though. The thesis-defense-panels are for really high ranks, like Professor of Time and Relative Dimension (a.k.a. TARD).

...I am staying the hell away from your guild. And I like immersing myself in the fluff.
That just borders on the ridiculous. It is one thing to write up theories or philosophy or sermons, but you're demanding proof and evidence in a situation where there can't possibly be any, unless you make it up. In which case that isn't evidence.

I get what you're saying, but nobody's expecting you to solve a calculus problem. Just come up with a vaguely original idea that fits within Lusternia's established mythos and talk about it, even if your proctor says 'lulz u got it all rong.' Maybe the new wording clarifies it better, since we wrote that in a rather large hurry:
I don't think we can really water down the science RP of the Institute much more. Sorry.

Mastery is not expected; you are being tested less on your knowledge
than on your thought processes. Be logical and you will do well.

I think as an Institute member, you can go into any sort of convoluted dialogue and provided you use big, fancy words. You'll probably fit in just fine. If all else fails, look up debating fallacies and call anyone out who tries to argue with you.

Oh, goodness yes. The Vocabulary Bomb will be all you need 70% of the time or so.

If I read the Narrative right, it wasn't so much that the Institute was too scientific, but that the requirement demanded a way to test the theories. I don't think it's too much to ask someone to create some crazy idea about time, but asking them to come up with an empirical test for their crazy idea is pretty rough stuff.

That's fine! I have no problem Making Stuff UpTM. I just don't want to have to prove anything using actual freaking math. Because I suck at math worse than I suck at fighting. Seriously, I had to drop College Algebra three separate times cause of just not getting it and not wanting a failing grade to screw up my GPA.
I'm even fine with having to use actual real scientific terms and principles, as long as I have time to research them first and it's not just sprung on me.
But, I'm just hoping that folks will remember that not everyone is a scientist IRL and go a little easy when people make mistakes or use a term wrong.
And stay the hell away from math!
(as a requirement, I mean)
Nienla2010-07-02 17:37:33
Not to mention, you could probably always discredit someone in the Institute by pointing out how large of a moron they are. Works in real life scientific societies.

Not every guild and character niche is for everyone! If that's the sort of players they want to attract (and it's a fairly sensible affair), so be it.
I've heard good things about both new guilds! Personally, I'm excited to see how things pan out.

Ah, and that's fine too.
But, if there are plans to require math in any advancement, I will ask the courtesy of being told now. So I can abandon my alt before I buy any lesson packages for it.
Thanks!

Or you can just ignore gaining rank in the guild, and follow your own path. Not all scientists are accepted by the present establishment, and sometimes those not accepted can actually be the ones who actually have the more correct theories.
note: No clue why I used excepted instead of accepted

Well, that's true too, I suppose. Sorry I was snippy. I'm annoyed cause my boss said I could go home but I decided to stay to figure out this problem at work before I go, but I can't figure it out and everyone who could help me has gone home already. It combined with my dislike of mathematics and created a Bad Mood which I went and inflicted on this thread.
In fact, now I feel downright silly for getting so worked up over it! Thanks, Geb! So what if there's math! I don't have to do it if I don't want to. I can just do my own thing and find a way to contribute. Just like with the fighting!

I really am not the kind of person to play alts. I never do it. But I am sorely tempted by the Institute.
Llesvelt2010-07-02 18:05:08
I think the Institute is awesome.
I am not a big fan of mathematics, but I like the whole -feel- of it.
Ease down on the hate < _ < (Just saying).

I still recommend waiting until they've done special envoys for both guilds before spending money on alts. Just saying.

In another dimension, where the Institute had been the first guild of Hallifax, I'd have very likely remained in Hallifax instead of going to Gaudiguch and enjoying the Pyromancers, Templar, and Illuminati.

The Institute seems sooo super neat, and I've always been curious about guardians and all that fun stuff, but...then...it's covered in time things. And try as I might I just cannot understand it, not even enough to fake it!
It's a personal issue. The guild is way cool. I'm just kind of slow when it comes to...sciency and mathy things. It's like all the juice in my head turns to molasses. Sniffle.

So what you do is use your personal knowledge/understanding and translate it in to HUGE vocabulary. Voila, done.
