It's overall what YOU make of it and I personally don't find the advancement requirements of a scientific society to be inappropriate if they include something scientific. (Trying to encourage the Institute Guild Leaders)

With my experience in Elostian's Order and in general being a GM for at least 2 RL years, people would be highly upset if we required anything really scientific to advance (even when the "scientific" requirements are no harder than requirements of other guilds). Essentially about 5 people would make it past the scientific requirements. I think what people don't realize is that Lusternian science is no different than Lusternian religion. Writing up a sermon about the Demon Lords is about the same as writing a scientific theory (except we have a little bit more background knowledge of the Demon Lords), you are creatively inventing some fact or statement about a story using the knowledge your character has about that facet of the story.

Big Question: Do Crystals or Flesh Summons suffer certain penalties when they are in the opposing Cosmic Planes? And if they do not, shouldn't they be? I know it would be harsh for them to poof the way angels and demons do, but are they perhaps disabled while on opposing planes?

We don't have crystal ents. The Champ is the only one who has one.
Lawliet2010-07-03 14:13:17
She means do your ton of passive crystals take any sort of penalty.

Aww, but testing the experiment is half the fun.

"So if I mix the red vial with the yellow vial, the unobtanium in the handwavium should react with the applied phlebotinum. Then when we heat it over the magicisscience thingy, it should create a minimal temporal transcendental hypotermical sciencynamical portal that will make it age to dust in seconds. *combine reagents. Watch non fatal explosion. Get a B+*

There's only as much math as you want to put in, Noola. And if you're having trouble, it's just to do a little "Tell Kiradawea/Ileein/Arel/Renthur/GT I need some help" and we'll help you. If you have trouble, think like a comic book writer, and not a scientist.

And remember that science is everywhere. Music is science, writing is science, food is science for hungry people. The requirements are there to make RP and fun, not to hold you back. (We struggled real hard to not require any writing before guild rank three, since that's such a major turndown for most, even when it fits so well with the guild RP).

And Shula, of course you'll remain guild rank one. You haven't deposited the gold for guild rank two yet. *wink*

Tada new elements discovered. Though James Cameron might be peeved over the first one
Nobel Prize for you.

Elostian also loves to help out with experiments. If you have an idea of something you want to do, Elostian will usually RP it out with you if he isn't super busy. Ileein wanted to do an experiment to see if you could turn air into something solid, and Hallifax with popping with explosions for a couple days, and viola, Ileein made a statue out of solid air. Now we have walls made out of solid air in the Institute guild hall. Experiments very rarely require any sort of knowledge, just imagination!

EDIT: Also, emoting an experiment like Kira promo'd in her last post isn't any different than a bunch of rituals that I've seen in the Shadowdancers, or impromptu performances done by the Harbingers. It's a bit of creative expression smile.gif

James Cameron did not invent Unobtainium. The fact that he named his precious element "Unobtanium" actually shows a severe lack of creativity on his part, much like the rest of the movie.

I love that movie. I saw it five times at the IMAX screen I love it so much. tongue.gif

I laughed my head off at the name in the movie, but this reference was so overt that I think it's more like a wink to the audience, not a cop-out. It'd be like having a character named MacGuffin, or for that matter, Basil Exposition.

Back on topic: if I do try out an Institute alt, I probably will develop scientific theories, and even coordinate them together. I did something similar for inventing a theory of medicine for the world Hârn (correlated with the Shek-Pvar elements, while also mixing in bits of Galen's theories of humours). I wonder how well I'd do submitting those as bardics, though. Scholarly works tend to do miserably in the bardics.

Well, unobtanium is a real term coined by aerospace engineers. It just means an incredibly expensive or rare material.
Aerotan2010-07-03 15:03:23
Personally I prefer raritanium. It's less of a hassle to work with. wink.gif

In all seriousness, my researcher (is this even the proper term?) alt is a doctor, rather than a temporal scientist, and even he was able to come up with a workable theory that the timestream looks more like a river on low grounds, meandering and coming close to itself at points, than it does a line. Granted, for the next rank up, his theories are going to relate more to the nature of diseases and ailments than time, since we're given a bit more leeway on the second set of tasks.

And used heavily in most sci-fi!

I'm liking the Institute, since it's an alt that I'm playing there I probably wont go far, same for the Illus (Hey, I'm a TM, Minister, GA I got lots to do ohmy.gif ) but I'm very much enjoying the concepts of self transformation, and of course the fact that the Institute use various gemstones to work their stuff. If only Hallifax interested me on a whole, I'd be riiiight in there with Mieari. wub.gif

If a guild is going to force people to do creative writing assignments to become a full member (eg GR3) then I sure hope they are not going to keep people to the library standard (or design submit standards in case of designs).
Unknown2010-07-03 18:59:46
So.. do the Illuminati have an ETA on the rest of our GHELPs and stuff? Whose working on all the paths?
Furien2010-07-03 19:33:43
Might as well ask in-game, because here the only answer I can give is 'heh'.

I'm just curious, because I've been a part of brand new guilds before, but on the helping set-up side, and I'm just curious what is taking so long to get anything up.

Aiyana reads the forums and will murder you if she can find your character. tongue.gif

She works... most of the afternoon, tired as hell when she gets home, though it doesn't help that the Secretaries aren't moving all that quickly either.

I'm not blaming her, though. The GA isn't supposed to do all that. What she does need to do is get her Path Heads or Prelates or whatever to start actually working.

If you want to be a path head, then getting your path running should take precedence.

On top of that.. why do the Transmology Learning Messages say that we can create a homonculus, hinting that its like the trans ability, when we pretty obviously can't.

Unless that's supposed to be what the Champion ent is?
