I just don't see why it matters how hard it is to gain guildrank when you don't actually need that rank for anything. If the Aquamancers decide you can get GR3 by clapping your hands and the Institute decides you need to write a dissertation for it, what's the big deal? These two guilds have just decided that GR3 means something different to them. Since the guildrank doesn't actually do anything, it really doesn't affect you at all unless you just like the way the number 3 looks next to your name in GWHO or something. There's no need to pay attention to your guild's totally arbitrary ranking system when it isn't actually good for anything beyond totally arbitrary bragging rights.

Rank is as important as the organisation collectively considers it to be. It may just be a number, but you can attach privileges and reverence and other forms of significance to the higher ranks. You can say that it's arbitrary underneath all of that, but that's not much fun.
Noola2010-07-04 09:27:55
Besides, yes. I do like the way the GR3 or GR6 or GR12 looks beside my name. Why? Because it means (like I said before) that my work has been appreciated. That I've put in the time to help my guild. That other people can see that I have done so.

Just cause you don't think it's important, doesn't mean that other people can't think it's important.

I think our different types of wands are the closest we get. I'm not sure how much sense pathways would have for harmonics...

That said... maybe methodologies or the like regarding how they approach their experimentation?

I like the thought of being able to pick one of the abstract concepts of the Spheres and sort of let that mold your character's RP/worldview. Could do it either through when you pick you wand, or as something different, and you could get some small bonus based on which sphere you picked (akin to how symbols give 5dmp based on which deepbond you have). There are 12 spheres which give you the ability to not get boxed into one of five predetermined things, and the abstractness of it all will keep people (like guildleaders) from defining what it means too much.

Not to mention that you can't vote below GR3.

That's true, I forgot about that. Still, it doesn't matter above GR3.
Razenth2010-07-04 17:30:07
You can spy on your guild members at GR19+

Except Demigods. Otherwise, that is a very useful priv. suspicious.gif

EDIT: Oh, and I thought you couldn't guildfavour/disfavour until GR5?
Razenth2010-07-04 17:38:44
Imagine my surpise when I made Demigod and couldn't spy on them still. I THINK I CAN COMPREHEND THEIR POWER THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Everiine2010-07-04 19:10:42
Mechanically, GR3, GR5, and GR19 are the only ones that matter. But if people want to structure things so that GRs matter for certain things, even if it's who gets to eat first at hero fetes, let them. It may not matter to you, but it matters to other people. Just like "winning" is the only thing that matters to some people, but it doesn't matter to others. In this scenario, no one is wrong.
Unknown2010-07-04 19:41:19
GR stops mattering once you're old enough that people just don't bother applying their laws to you. Like the title laws, which several guilds have, where you have to be a certain GR to have a title of your choosing. Doesn't apply if you're just old enough that people don't care.

There are all sorts of privs you pick up between GR5 and GR19.

From: Estarra, the Eternal
To : Everyone
Subj: Of Fleshpots and Master Crystals

We adjusted somewhat how crystal facets and flesh petals accumulate on
Fleshpots and Master Crystals. Each gem or flesh quest will always add a
minimum of 3 petals or facets. If there are 4000 facets/petals, they
will produce 4 per gem/quest. If there are over 5000 facets/petals, they
will produce 5 per gem/quest. This will continue up to a maximum of 10
per gem/quest. While you can maximize production by keeping the
Fleshpots and Master Crystals at over 10,000 facets/petals, there is a
risk that the Fleshpot/Master Crystal could die which would be pretty
painful.

Penned by My hand on the 1st of Roarkian, in the year 268 CE.

Some of 'em are very useful! Score, skills, lastlogin...
Noola2010-07-04 20:14:50
So, they made a way you can maximize production, but if you overwork your sphere/fleshpot, it'll die of exhaustion like a hungry sweatshop worker! laugh.gif

I think what they meant was that, if you were keeping all your stuff in the pot/sphere instead of harvesting it, you'll lose more when you get raided, whereas your harvested flesh/gems are safe.

Could be wrong, though!
Noola2010-07-04 20:18:21
Oh. I guess that's prolly it.

I like my version better. losewings.gif
