Isn't the Serenguard emote Gaelic?

Yes, but so far as I know, no explanation was ever given for where the words came from. It's just something Malicia liked, and eventually got put into place once no one was still around to argue that it ought to be something Lusternian in origin.

Lendren, what language is Maylea using for the order?

The divine language Ae, I believe.

Wha? I thought only third circles used that.

Interesting

I went looking in the OHELPs for the answer...

QUOTE (OHELP RANKS)
Composed by: Sylphas
Composed on: 23rd of Vestian, 257 CE

The Ranks of the Order of Lady Maylea

Lady Maylea has chosen to name the ranks in Her Order with words from
Ae, the ancient dialect of the Divine.

So if you want to know more, go ask this Sylphas fellow who wrote the scroll, maybe he can help. wink.gif

I just edited it once because, uh, I totally forget. Something needed fixed. confused.gif

I figured it was something like that, but I decided it was too rich an opportunity to poke fun for me to pass up. smile.gif

And that's why I'll probably never be a Blacktalon. As cool as all that is, learning a whole new language and having to use it properly is waaaay too much work. laugh.gif

Most people only use 4-7 words of it. Even at the height of my BT geekdom, I couldn't carry a real conversation in it. Part of that was the limited vocabulary, part of it was that I think apostrophe-laden fantasy dialects are dumb, but most importantly, no one knew the difference, because when you know 20-ish words and most people know 4-7, people think you actually took it seriously. The only time I even pretended to hold a serious conversation in Crow was when I knew the divine were eavesdropping and I could communicate over IM simultaneously...and believe me, it was mostly ma'de'up w'ords.
Sylphas2010-06-16 19:21:53
This makes me really want to actually make a language from scratch. Once you've got all the rules and some roots, it's not difficult to expand the vocabulary.
Sakr2010-06-16 19:28:20
technically, it's not. I was thinking about buying a clan, and creating an organizational language for that clan only. If we can get people to learn the language, and have over the years more and more people learn that language for that clan, it could become official.

It's a clan, probably secret, and the rules of the language is developed there. We can speak of it to each other, as we are clan mates, even if it was outside, it would be roleplaying as we are speaking to each other in this language others cannot understand being of that clan. Then if a background could be developed for that language, it could be brought out as an organizational language in hallifax. Even with the being mocked part, I think it would be worth it.
Noola2010-06-16 19:37:24
Yeah, sorry. If I'm gonna take the time to learn an actual language for actual use, it's gonna have to be Spanish.

how about arabic? it's very easy to manipulate, rules are simple for the language. and it could work. it would sound rough with some dialects, akin to a bird if you will.

how about arabic?

Well, see, the chances are slim I'd run across someone trying to talk to me in Arabic. But there's lots of folks around here who speak Spanish.

I tried to take it in college, but my professor kept failing me in pronunciation cause I am physically incapable of making that rolly R sound. I didn't want a bad grade dragging down my GPA, so I dropped it and took French. I can make that R sound! laugh.gif

But now, I wish I knew Spanish, cause of how there's lots of folks who speak it around here. So, I'm thinking of getting that Rosetta Stone thing sometime and learning it where I don't have someone trying to give me F's for not being able to roll my tongue while I talk.

eta: And if you mean as an IC language. My point is, I have enough to think about considering learning RL languages. I don't want to have to actually learn a fake language to enjoy a game. laugh.gif

eta again: Which isn't to say that I don't think folks should make a language if they want! More power to ya! thumup.gif Just, please don't make rules in any guilds or orgs that you have to know it! laugh.gif
Sakr2010-06-16 19:47:21
So itha bidi ehki heik, would you understand what I'm saying?

The rolling r sound, don't worry about it when it comes to the language. And the written form, is different than the classical form in some cases. And I think i know of a couple people here that speak arabic.

small tip, inte, inta. inte is for a female, inta is for male.
keefik is how are you to a female
keefak is the same, but to a male.

bas zay ma bidik. = But it's how you want.

edit: i understand, hehe

I've got a poem in Bardics that was written in Crowtongue, and like the X-Man said, it was all pretty much made up words. The main trick was to make sure I was consistent.

Crowtongue is, more or less, a cipher for English, so it's not a truly constructed language in the sense of having declensions, different grammatical rules, etc. There's the barest touch of that, but not much at all.

Crowtongue conversations go like this:

1. Figure out how to say it in English.

2. Replace English words with sounds like a crow might make.

3. Add apostrophes.

4. If you say the same thing in English, try to use the same Crowtongue word you used before. If you mess up, mutter something about synonyms.

Hmm, well I wouldn't be opposed to creating a Trill language in game. I bet it be sound very musical and artistic.

It was this line under HELP Isune,

Once of the fourth circle, the goddess Isune was known before the Elder Wars
for such acts as painting the sky with Her sister Trillillial, making variants
of avian creatures, or granting wings to beings normally lacking them.

So i thought you could read it as, they both created birds, dragons, and what not together, OR they could have made trills as well.

Yeah, but it's generally understood that races come from a Divine sharding. They aren't creations at all.

Edit: Created probably isn't the best word, but created in the game sense in association with divine usually means animals and stuff like that not the races. I'm really really tired right now and can't explain it better.

There's the whole... technically nothing can be created or destroyed without Dynara/Magnora but it's a conversation for in-game.

Just remember that, especially in hallifax, you could also go all sci-fi and have reverse babelfish that make your words incomprehensible to those without fish in their ears(at will of course).

I'm a little bothered by the fact that you called the Gods "Admin" and managed to get away with that. >.>

Aside from that, interesting discussion. I've wondered the reasoning as well why certain splintered races didn't get their own languages.
