What makes this game great?

Back to Common Grounds.

Getting zapped by the Gods is awesome. None of my characters ever get zapped though. They're all too respectful. Maybe I'll make a crazy irreverent alt or something sometime. laugh.gif

Oh, but I remember when my Noola character was maggoted and driven insane by Terentia when she left Celest. That was really great fun!

FOR THE HONEYGUARD.

I agree with the favours, they are free-flowing here compared to other IRE's. It's great.

The combat is primarily group based, a lot of it because Lusternia encourages group mentality for each respective side (Light, Taint, Nature, Wyrd, ...erm, Collectivism and uh, Enlightenment? etc.). Like, a lot of the public RP that I've seen happens within the orgs (i.e. if you're a citizen in there), not so much with other orgs, judging by how no one uses our public news ever. But that is a tangent.

1v1's happen though if you look for it.

I've always always liked that there are a lot of things you can do here besides combat, like influence, write books, run plays, and more.

And I'm of the opinion that admin do nothing but harass the player, but c'est la vie.

Anyway, what I should warn you about is that there is little one on one here. Most combat is in groups, as it is initiated as attacks upon your org, or in freeforalls in the form of village revolts and wildnodes. The power system is also a bit... shall we say unfair, with some classes using far more power than others.

Beyond that, Lusternia has many interesting systems. The guilds are probably the best part of Lusternia though. Perhaps I'm spoiled as a member of guardian guilds only, but I feel that Lusternia has the most flavourful guilds in all of IRE. Quests are also well done in the flavour department. Really, flavour is where Lusternia shines. It is light enough for most, yet surprisingly grimdark when you know where to look.

I actually like the power system, we've got some crazy skills here and many of them are entirely justified by their crazy power requirements. Otherwise, they'd have been nerfed a long time ago.

The rich historical background that makes everything fit together, past and present and future, like it was all one vision from one world that arose in one mind. Which it is.

And the great variety of things you can do that ensures that no matter what are your tastes, there's an activity for you.*

*Offer does not apply to anyone who's part of whatever nation is currently bottom of the totem pole. All you can do then is try to survive long enough for Shuyin to join your org.
Krellan2010-06-29 22:03:05
if you want 1v1 best stick to the spars, they're the same as anywhere else except with the 10 minute timer. Lots of people like those. Vadi is finishing up a system here as well.

Wow...after posting this i was thinking "man I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to trans a bunch of skills in another game..." Now that's all I want to do. The player base seems amazing as well as the admin! Guess I'll be making a character shortly.

Are all the classes and everything pretty balanced? Or are there some really over/underpowered ones? Which ones are more complicated (i'd like to try to avoid those starting out). Thanks again for the help!
Kiradawea2010-06-29 23:22:56
Guardians, Wiccans and Warriors are complicated. The Hallifax and Gaudiguch guilds are the least balanced, but the Cantors are also considered very bad. Beyond that, most guilds are decently balanced, with none I'd consider to be outstandingly powerful.
Unknown2010-06-30 00:23:06
Awesome! About how many credits/lessons do you have to get to to be decent and not easily killed? Like in achaea i'd say tri-trans (900creditsish) and then trans survival. Anything like that here? Roughly how many credits/lessons would I need to "tri-trans"?

Thanks again for the help!
Jack2010-06-30 00:34:28
Depends which guild you're going for. Some are more credit-intensive than others. If I recall, mages and monks can impact group combat with just their primary skills (Kata + spec for monks, Elementalism + spec for mages), but a guardian, for example, would need to be tri-trans at a minimum to be competitive. It helps a lot to have conglutinate in Planar, too, since it'll minimize experience loss when you fight off-plane.
Xavius2010-06-30 00:34:34
That's a more complicated question than you might think, and depends a bit on your guild choice. We generally don't kill newbies, so it might even be easier to play for a while, then decide later what you want to invest in.

Also, ignore the non-combatant's opinions on combat balance. tongue.gif Hallifax and Gaudiguch are very new cities, so their guilds are in a bit of flux. Monks are widely considered to be the best in pure PvP terms. Many high-end combatants gravitate towards warriors because they have the best artifacts, but they tend to be mediocre-ish without them. If that's not where your interests lie, you can get better utility skills from a guardian or wiccan guild. Mages and druids are a good way to get involved in Lusternia's group combat dynamics because of their multi-room passive effects. Bards here play a bit like Achaean mages, but with better flavor (with the caveat that the Cantors really are atrociously bad).
Krellan2010-06-30 00:39:16
Just judging from your posts, I'd say pick a guild first, if you go glom, dibs mentor, then let us know what guild you've picked and we can give you a better idea of what you'll want. Resilience is a common skillset that helps with damage mitigation and poisons shrugging.
Unknown2010-06-30 01:16:33
Are you Wystan, perhaps? Just so very curious. >.>
Unknown2010-06-30 02:14:08
I am not. Started a mage I think it was, geomancer. Lost...completely lost...reading help scrolls nonstop...too many planes, ways of combat, bromide potions? *explodes*
Rael2010-06-30 02:14:28
My favorite thing about Lusternia are the players. My least favorite thing about Lusternia are also the players. wink.gif

I like Lusternia because there is something for everybody. Whether you're interested in scripting, literature, fantasy, combat, art work, politics, business (accumulating wealth), or roleplay there's something for everyone and infinite replay value. My biggest complaint about Lusternia is that you need to spend lot of free time or money to be successful which makes it difficult for your casual player. Also you pretty much need a system and scripting skills to play effectively so you can't just grab a computer and go. But otherwise it is a fine mud.

Bad form, Krellan. tongue.gif
Eventru2010-06-30 02:30:56
Yes, terribly bad form. Might want to take a re-read of HELP FORMENTORS there, Krellers. fisticuff.gif

He just want another protege that does more than design tons, and forgets how to raise a hood, sigh.

Actually, he wants a protege who buys credits.

Honestly.
