It's not the using up the gems, or the difficulty of making aliases, it's the time it takes to get all your effects set back up, and having to do that in the middle of the fight. I wouldn't mind having to spend another gem, or having to do another alias, it's that long delay at the worst possible time that is crazy. Maybe as a compromise, when a gem is getting destroyed because its target is gone, you get five seconds during which you can crystalspin the same kind of gem at no equilibrium or balance loss? Then it'll still cost a gem and an alias, but make it feasible to keep your effects up as you change targets.
Yeah, that's pretty much a researcher's most vulnerable moment. Right in the heat of combat and gems start winking out. I'm not very high in Aeonics, but Foresight looks like it might be useful in that short time frame. To be honest so far it hasn't happened to me yet. I largely leave my crystalplex off, and since tapping requires balance but doesn't consume it, my activate/deactivate aliases let me switch on the fly. Even when I'm waiting for someone to ambush me, they're not on. Is that terrible?
Also good to know that gems disappearing after target dies is getting fixed!
