If you can whip out a kill on one of Magnagora's beaters with novice skills, you've earned that privilege.
I wouldn't be surprised if a Caco would with just Music.

If a novice managed to kill me, I'd see about swapping them in for Solanis.

This sounds like an open invitation to try killing all of you.
EDIT: I just need a class that plays like a Noctusari, and I could try hunger-whoring one of you to death.

Partly. Magnagora does recognize non-com nobles, and killing one of them would just be laughable. At the serf. You'd be called a coward and go through the normal punishment. However, if you killed me, you'd be rewarded. Even if it was due to me being mindless.

Seriously? If I've been playing for two or so years, mentored quite literally dozens of students and taught even more and know most the rules like the back of my hand... Why does it matter where the information like 'You probably shouldn't use smilies/emotes on the aethers' or 'You could probably do with reading HELP LANGUAGERULES', come from?
I'm really not trying to be argumentative but as long as we're not being abusive, giving misinformation or deliberately trying to undermine a guide for and giggles, I don't see the issue.

Sure, people like you can be trusted not to just snap at a novice on the Newbie aether. But not everyone who has access to the Newbie aether can. To be on the safe side then, it's limited to Guides and Admin so that there is a measure of control over it.
I'm really tired, so I hope that came across correctly, since it works much better in my head. I guess it's like if you wanted salt in your food, but you had this big mixture of salt and pepper. Salt good, pepper bad. Instead of pouring the whole mixture in and hoping for the best, you'd find some separated salt all by itself to add. It's not that the salt in the mixture isn't any less than the separated salt, but by using just the separated salt, you are much more able to control the pepper.

I also need to mention that you'd be rewarded if you were perceived as a novice, newbie, lowbie. Vathael is a serf, but I doubt people would be "Ooh Vathael, you're so stawng!" if he killed someone. I actually think most people treat Vathael as a higher ranked citizen than as that puny CR1.

On another note, Vathael probably wouldn't be a serf if WE COULD SEE HIS CITY RANK IN HIS HONOURS.

Just put on your scroll, "You can sense nothing in the tangled skeins of aether around Vathael beyond a subtle suggestion that perhaps a cityfavour is in order."

So far I havent really seen anyone treat me like dirt. Actually ever since I entered, Magnagorians have been offering their help and asking me how I was doing. The only time I actually had someone correct me for something was when I bowed to them instead of salute and that person wasnt even mad about it she just corrected me and told me I was suppose to salute.
so far I enjoy Magnagora. I am going to knock on wood so I wont jinx it though.

Wow, I can't believe I missed this post before it grew to 5 pages. Then again, I don't come to the forum much when I'm not at work, and it was my weekend.
But yeah, I agree with Gavriel, and even Kio to an extent. Magnagoran RP is not for everyone. I never want to go out of my way to upset someone OOCly just because of the RP. For that matter, that was part of why I've been reluctant to have Ongaku do a 180 and force himself to be an imperious noble outside of his manse. My thought has always been that an administrator should probably be the nicest of the three guild leaders, since we're the ones who have the novices and newbies to handle. And don't get me wrong, Ongaku's still probably the nicest Mag ever, but he won't hesitate to put someone in their place anymore.
Here's my thing: if I'm upsetting you OOCly, please don't hesitate to talk to me OOCly. While I don't know who's okay with me speaking to them in an OOC manner, I'm going to throw it out there right here and now that if you feel the need to discuss something with me in tells OOCly, then by all means, go for it. I highly encourage it, in fact!
For the year and a half I was gone from Lusternia, I RPed in an environment in which, if something IC was upsetting you OOC, you told people, and the RP was either halted or somehow slowly turned around so that no further upset was caused. Granted, that may not always be an available option, nor will it be agreeable to everyone, but that's how I operate now. My goal is never to hurt anyone in a manner that they don't want to come back to Lusternia or to drive people away from RPing with me, because I love RP and want to have as much of it as possible.
If there is ever a newbie who is feeling harassed or violated or whatever by someone higher up in Magnagora though, they are more than welcome to talk to Ongaku. While he's not afraid to put Serfs in their place for not bowing to someone higher-up, he will also stick his neck out for anyone he feels is being treated unfairly, whether Serf or Count, and he's always willing to listen, just as I am OOC.
EDIT: And I just saw Sahmiam's first post in this thread. For shame, nephew, for shame! Ongaku would be very disappointed (at the very least) if he heard Sahm had been drunk in public, and despite not having a very close uncle-nephew relationship, Gaku would probably have smacked him a few times with his staff. Shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame!

QUOTE (Jigan @ Jul 8 2010, 01:29 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Why do people use such silly and heavy handed tactics?
Simply in their greetings, inform them that as Serfs, they will be expected to handle various things and might be punished every so often for various infractions. Don't go ((You are a serf, be prepared for be beaten)), but "Greetings serf, as a forwarning, you have a special place in Magnagora. You will serve those above you. While this may seem wrong, at first, it will quickly dawn on you that survival of the fittest is one of the best traits of Magnagora. As such, you will occasionally be beaten or degraded for infractions to encourage you to do better and not get caught. Also, avoid the Jigan."
THEN, and only then do you tell them with a follow up: ((Just in case, if someone really goes over boundries, send them a TELL to ask them to tone it down. If they continue to cross the line, try to step away from them, avoid them, and let a city leader know. If it's really, really bad, HELP ISSUES.)).
Give them every single chance you can give them. Give them IC reason to expect it, then give them a reason to allow it. If you give people an exit door, they are more willing to do your will. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment
In this study and several follow up studies, many people were lead to believe that they had authority to obey, because someone in authority was giving them permission. They had the "I was told to do it" defense. Give the serfs the knowledge that they can ask to quit will allow them to test the waters deeper than normal because they know they can, and are expected (That's the important part right there. The expectation) to ask people to tone it down if it gets heavy.
This method is far less intrusive and less "WARNING!" and more "Just so you know." So people take it to heart faster and are less likely to startle like deer.

I want to make an alt, just to interact with Jigan.

I actually should probably start doing that. I also need to tell my Pupils that they HAVE to have my help after exiting the portal, because I want to help them more, and they just all go do their own thing.
