And yet everyone knows you play.

Yeah, that's cause my facebook is facebook.com/shaddus, and my main page actually mentions Lusternia and Shaddus tongue.gif

Lol, I'll go have a look. Forum rage is always tantalizing.

Edit: Oh god, what an epic thread. The first post has so much rage I'm surprised it's not in all caps and misspelled. Poor WoW people, hopelessly addicted to their online video game with a merciless tyrannical corporation constantly squandering their enjoyment at its behest.
Shaddus2010-07-07 18:57:00
I rather liked this.

Let's say I get royally destroyed by an Undead Rogue in PVP (lol that wouldn't happen because I'm Paladin aka best class in the game, but just run with it)

Lol, just lol.

Edit: That was pretty awful, but it seems Blizzard doesn't even think of reprecussions before they develop these days.

Read an article earlier that what blizzard is doing is in fact against the dutch privacy law. Uh oh. This could get interesting. I'm personally waiting till mainstream media picks up on this (as with the facebook privacy leaks) and the drama storm gets really going. Don't get me wrong, I wish no ill upon Blizzard, but this is something that could really break their "perfect" image.

Well, they only have a "perfect" image amongst those people who thought WoW was a fitting successor to Warcraft III.

Or that any of their games was a fitting successor to any prior game they made...

Or that any of their games were any good...

...

At some point, I had a point. Nothing to see here dry.gif

(Disclaimer: I rather like Blizzard.)
Kepthira2010-07-07 22:55:07
Blizzard is alright. I still have fond memories of Warcraft 2 when I was just a little girl. Point is, Blizz got too greedy this time, and they're gonna get a smack on the knuckles for it.

Canadian law also apparently has issues with this.

I dunno if it is solely Blizz that's behind all the recent changes. I mean, RealID yea that's Blizz's baby, but some of the many changes that happen (that they said they weren't going to do or had no interest in doing) happened after the merge with Activision and part of me thinks that might be part of the problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I had heard that RealID identification was not limited to the forums.

That being said this is taking away some privacy, which is bound to step on very sensitive toes. On the topic of WoW friends having too many alts: I'm fairly sure you can just put notes in your friends list and say "This is so-and-so's alt." And if you want to stay connected with friends from other games/etc, get their MSN or AIM names. I did that quite a bit and didn't have a problem. If anything, it's almost making yet another facet of social interaction ("Hey, this has been a lot of fun, what's your MSN?") non-existant.

As was said earlier, RealID is not limited to forums it is a gamewide (not just to wow either but to SC2 and Diablo3 when they come out, I think it might also effect WC3 not sure) service/thing/whateva.

That's a wonderful solution if I actively got on MSN or AIM, which I don't. And you can't keep track of friends' alts on the opposite faction/another server. Which is essentially what RealID is going to help do.

Blizz has never had a "perfect" image, atleast not that I know of. Most of its playerbase does not think that Blizz is like the holy grail of gaming. You should head over to MMO-Champion.com and read some of the threads about Blizz. I highly doubt if you talked to a wow/sc/diablo player you'd heard them spewing out love and affection for Blizz.

Anyway, I hope that they realize that this isn't the best idea and decide to keep the old forum ways.

This would be a wonderful program in all ways I can think of if it used an alias tied to your account. Hell, I'd be fine with it if you could actually change the name tied to your account, but you can't without calling Blizzard and jumping through hoops. There is no reason to use people's real names and not an account alias except that account aliases aren't worth anything for marketing money.

I have an incredibly unique real name, so this whole policy makes me VERY iffy, as I can't be mistaken for anyone else. The whole situation with the mod who gave out his real name was hilarious, as they got his phone #, home address, photos of him, etc. and they deleted the thread shortly thereafter.

My female WoW toon has been solicited for some hawt cyberlovin' from time to time, so the paranoia in me makes me even more nervous to have my name out there, since (1) I'm actually female and (2) it can't be mistaken for a male name. God knows what crazy little teenage boys would do with that info, especially if they can get my home address, phone #, etc like that unfortunate mod.

PS: Sarvasti, I can't stop watching your signature.

A few other people have done the same thing and put their names out there. One blogger called a man at work and asked if he still believed in posting under his real name.
Calixa2010-07-08 00:40:05
Was told they ordered pizza for the mod who posted his name as well.

That kind of behaviour is actually why I'd consider it a good thing. If harrassment is your only solution to a problem, then you have larger problems than your anonymity.

Someone was stabbed and almost killed IRL for shooting someone in Counter-Strike. I'll take anonymous trolling over murder and real world harassment every time.

Pizza, I'm cool with. This type of story that Sylphas referred to is decidedly not cool.

ETA: still watching, Sarvasti.

Pizza delivery is usually COD, so no, it's not cool.

This RealID thing is simply a terrible idea on Blizzard's part. Internet anonymity exists for a reason.

If Blizzard wishes to curtail trolling and bad behavior, it should be trivial to tie forum accounts to paid subscriptions, and to allow only one account per subscription.
