Help files are, as the name suggestions, for general helpful information and lists, whereas projects are usually used for new interesting developments or initiatives. The greatest advantage of projects over help files is that a help file can only be edited by people with certain rank whereas projects can be assigned.
Namely, city help files can only be edited by Ministers and the Council (guild and city leaders). Guild help files can only be edited by Secretaries and Guild Leaders (all three).
In a Guild, a project can be started by any of the leaders (I don't think secretaries can) and any of the three leaders can hijack the project making themselves the leader (so can edit it) or hand it off to someone else to edit. In a city, only the Council can make new projects (I think?) and only they can hijack or transfer it (I don't think ministers can). Basically, this allows for projects to be editable space for people without the rank to edit a help file because they aren't old/experienced enough to have the right rank for it or whatnot.
As Calixa mentioned, we use them in Magnagora and the Nihilists lavishly, as do most orgs and Guilds (I deleted the outdated ones too!). For example, I used to keep my GM agenda in a project as it simply didn't seem appropriate to have in a scroll, and one of Undersecretaries in training used to have their project for detailed information about a contest they were running.

Anyone GR10+ has full project privileges (so they can create and edit any guild project). In the city, only council members can create and hijack projects; ministers and CR6 folks just get normal access for some reason.
Funny story, in the Pyromancers undersecretaries have full project privileges!
Really, the best thing about a project is that editing is somewhat more restricted, but you can't tell which leader/GR10+ person moved your cheese if they edit your project and muck it up.

The Institute uses Projects for its Projects. Go figure.
Lendren2010-09-07 22:07:06
Spiritsingers use projects for anything that's constantly changing, like who's earned what advancement task, and GHELPs for anything that rarely changes, like what those advancement tasks actually are. GHELP MENTORS straddles the line, but I let it fall on the GHELP side just because newbie-types are more likely to stumble upon GHELPs.
What would be great is if projects could also have a name and be referred to by it, not just a number.

You stand near the centre of a great machine with massive wheels and gears turning slowly around you, their wooden and metal cogs grinding with ear-splitting noise. Between the components, fields of shifting and pulsing silver light hold back a black cloud of mist which assaults the field with tendrils of shadow. A golden, clawed hand sits at the centre of the machine, irregularly pulsing with the same silver energy as the field holding back the shadows.
What's this about?
Lendren2010-09-08 00:26:28
The Claw of Shanth.

Meh. I'll just scrap that character and try Hallifax. I hate essays, though.
We're not that mean, at least not in the Sentinels so obviously you should join us.

Maybe! The character I had in mind likes to invent and blow things up and such, so she'd be more at home in the Institute. I despise cosmicfire bashing, though, especially after bashing as an illithoid monk. So nice.
Anyway, my question: I'm still having trouble visualizing Magnagora after all this time. I'm thinking pipes, smog, gears, clockwork, and cobblestones. How far off is that?

The Aeromancers are science-y without being overbearingly writing-intensive! (In fact, no writing is required at all until our last advancement exam, and even then it's a really small thing and there are options involved.) We're kind of a mish-mash of a lot of things...philosophers, artists, scientists...sometimes it feels like we're the "Other" category when it comes to choosing a guild in Hallifax. But you know, I am perfectly ok with that! It makes my job more interesting.

Pretty much dead on. It's a more steampunkified variant on the Jack the Ripper take of Victorian London: the constant fog, chemical residue from factories and dead hookers are all present, but the dudes in top hats have crimson skin and glowing eyes, and there's way more mutants scuttlin' to and fro.

I've tried speaking to various members, starting conversation with conventional and non-conventional topics, and so on. Nothing. Crickets. I had an illithoid monk idea, but it's not as fun when you're just talking to yourself. If I wanted single-player RP, I'd rather pop-in Demon's Souls and make stuff up on the fly...
Not sure if this kind of stuff happens often, but I'm usually sitting around the Wailing Woman Inn or the Mag Library and more than willing to waste away hours conversating about any random topic that catches my interest.

Keep in mind that members might be off-plane (won't show in gwho list, but will be indicated on the bottom of it). Depending on how good you are in planar you voice might not reach them. People might also be afk, or bashing. Happens to me a lot I am in the middle of hostile ground and I get a tell or something is said on guild and by the time I can respond the person is gone already

That would make a good Nihilist.

I think you're right on the money. Think industrialism, industrial progress and clockwork mechanisms and smog. Except sometimes the smog is taint. Or the smog is taint and wants to eat you because you just walked into Gorgulu.
Unknown2010-09-08 06:59:45
And yeah. You're right on the money with Magnagora. We're evil Victorian London. We have gaslamps. If you are familiar with the book "Predido Street Station" Magnagora has been often compared and influenced by it.
Daraius2010-09-08 13:14:33
So um... How do you get unenemied to the illithoid?

Talk to Chthoglogg? POLITICS always tells you who's in charge, though that doesn't always mean it's possible to get to that person for amnesty (Marani, among others).

Ohh, thanks. I thought Politics was only for villages. That's super helpful.

Mind you, don't actually TALK around him, or he'll rip you in half. Just get someone with high influence skill to petition for you.

I know the peeps in candyland wield candy cane swords, and licorice whips. What do the gingerbread men wield? Must make this tapestry authentic, heh.

Licorice spears.
