I for one would love it to be moved from a custom map in Warcraft 3 and make it an independent game itself.

Miserably disappointing lack of initiative on Valve's part. We already HAVE HoN for "updated DotA clone that doesn't fix any of the core problems with DotA's design." LoL fixed some of them but managed to make some worse and create its own with its awful grind/leech model. We were kind of expecting something better from Valve, since they're so good at fun-focused design in other areas (TF2, L4D), like a game that purged all the cruft DotA accumulated from being basically the first notable work in its genre, its archaic engine and concessions it had to make due to being a mod in the first place. Instead we get this. Bah.
I may or may not buy it anyway though, depending on how likely the "takes 40 minutes to finish losing a game you already lost" aspect is to change.
EDIT: Also it seems like icefrog is horrible to work under for some reason but since -nothing is happening- with the design that won't even make any difference, so whatever.

I've never actually played DoTa, only heard about it a few time, and I'm honestly not sure if this is some elaborate joke or not. It didn't help that the Wikipedia article mentioned Duke Nukem.

Ill only get it if they add a surrender option and if my fav hero na'ix is there.

Well, combine legit-looking (and actually pretty good, I prefer it to HoN's character designs) art with blogs showing up about icefrog's working environment and it seems pretty likely.

I've seen plenty of jokes with legit-looking art. But, I looked into it more and never realized that DotA actually spawned this whole sub genre of games so yeah more believable now then, Valve is porting some random Warcraft3 map onto it's own engine.

Well, the fact they were making it was kind of a known quantity, given that they hired a guy known solely for this game, it's just the complete lack of doing anything with it that was in question.

Personally, this is the first time hearing of anything about DotA outside of that Basshunter song and brief random mentions of the name.
I can't really make any comments about any issues they're apparently not addressing. Though the community integration and coaching features they want to do sound rather interesting, if they actually work.

I remember DotA when it was on Reign of Chaos, and DotA: Stand of the Dwarves...
..My, I'm dating myself.
I miss the days when I had time for stuff like that...
I do find it highly curious that it's become such a fascination, though!

The graphics would be cool, but the announcement seems way late.

I love troll blogs.

I am surprised they billed it as a sequel in any sense. Just call it DotA: Source and be done with it.
Faymar2010-10-15 07:41:45
I'm amazed people still play DotA. I thought that everyone plays that dirt cheap copy with pretty colours these days.
Shiri2010-10-15 07:45:17
It's seen as a bit of sorry example of the genre by the competitive community (partly due to gigantic farmfests, partly due to awful grindy OR insanely expensive business model), so they either play the original or the -first- updated rerelease.
