I hunted them when I was little and didn't know that they were a big deal to us. Haven't had a chance to talk to Imhohet about it yet.

Okay, so for zap and shout we differentiate between flavourful preset messages and playermade messages with Choice and Custom respectively, but this isn't the case with EnterMessage, LookMessage and TeleportMessage. Shouldn't those three have their name changed from Custom to Choice?
Whether you want to introduce truly custom alternatives for those is up to you, of course.
Naughty.

Still rolling with the numbers we've been given at around 1m/hour for a good aetherhunting team, -40% comes in around 600k per hour.
Except you still ignore the fact that 1 mill/hour is only for turret, chair, and grid. (not to mention not even the average essence gained by a ship) The other modules make 1/4 that. For instance sitting on a siphon pre aetherexperience nerf I would make (with a 1mill/hour aethercrew) about 200k - 250k an hour, I have made far less depending on the crew I am with. Now I will make about 80k - 100k an hour. In comparison I can regular bash/influence 150k - 180k an hour PLUS make 30k - 50k in gold as I am doing it.
I can understand lowering the turret/chair/grid by 40% but the other modules should not have been touched.
Making sweeping changes without examining the whole picture is generally considered a Bad Thing.

Siphoning is hands down the easiest way of getting xp in the whole game. You need almost no skills at all, risk of dying with a capable pilot is close to 0 and the set of reflexes needed for it can be coded by a toddler.
If bashing and influencing were that effortless, why didn't most of the demigod host do it before? Some ascendants were offering 1 million essence for 8 credits for quite a while; at the current credit prices, that would have been an easy 500k-1M essence at the rate you claim to be making money while bashing or influencing. I think the catch is that bashing, unless you do it on Astral where you don't have to move to find bashables, isn't all that effortless. And Astral linking means no money gain, either.

Same with Muud, which can sustain no where near the same level of people.

I am well aware of how easy siphoning is. The whole of being on an aethership is easy. I am also well aware of how easy bashing/influencing is and that is not an ordeal either, sure you have to push a key to move rooms, but you don't need much more than that for either of them.
I am also well aware that siphoning is now hands down worse than bashing, for anyone. Zero risk of death doesn't make up for the boring, tedious, hours long grind of 'OMG how much longer do I have to sit here, I could be bashing and making twice this much and making gold to buy the things I need' of sitting on siphon. As it was, people would often ask to be let off a ship because sitting on a siphon was hands down the most boring thing to do and they wanted to -play- the game.

Easiest way is afk guard influencing, hands down
PS: Admins please make guards uninfluenceable again

and you make twice as much doing it.
You would think Vey would know that though, given how the influence ezmode was his ride to Demi.

Siphons get, and has gotten for quite some time (if not always), 50% of the essence/XP chair/turret/grid gets. That's what I've seen on all my aetherhunts as well as what Eventru says in an earlier post.
Veyrzhul2010-08-16 14:11:31
Guard influencing requires curatives, a certain character level and alot more lessons in influencing and possibly dramatics to be effective than you need in aethercraft to be able to siphon. Also, you need any guards to be there in the first place. There aren't that many around in all. It's certainly not the easiest way overall.
Generally, bashing and influencing require you to switch areas, which is certainly more than just pressing one key. The only area on top of my head that gets close to having enough mobs to do it over and over again is the illithoid prison. Provided you have it to yourself.
And yea, the approximately 0.1% of my xp to demi that I got from guard influencing made it alot easier.

0.1%? Huh. I seem to recall nasty Celestian comments about you just sitting on guards influencing while raids are going on. I would know; I sometimes raided and got "Please don't raid blah blah." from little lowbies.
Also, the 1 million essence per hour of aetherbashing, I think, applies to good ships (No, a bare 1 chair/1grid/3 turrets/1 collector is not a good ship) with good crew members (those who have invested many lessons into Aethercraft). Not a mediocre ship, not a crew with only Adept Aethercraft.
So yes. The essence gain slash of chair/gunner/empath I understand, but for the little things (siphoner), not so much.
PS We also must remember that siphoning actually uses up aetherwill much more quickly than the pilot/empath/gunner. Gasp!

Which also means that these people need to be higher levels then any guard influencer, also for the most efficient hunt these people will be unlocking to hunt slivven, meaning they might miss a few kills.
Although I like Veyrzhul's this train of thought of more investment should mean more xp. 200% xp increase for anisu when hunting on aquila for spending so much gold and credits on it plz!

See, I wasn't going to go there, cause everyone knows he guard influenced and aetherbubble influenced to Demigod. Which is probably the easiest thing to do, bar none.

I'm curious. The changes to the essence shop. Some essence costs were lowered right, but you're still working on the assumption that you can make 1 mill essence an hour? Even after you cut the highest possible hourly xp-gain by 40%..
And even then, why was this done? People have generally been content with this, so why now? And why cut it, instead of making other bashing methods more profitable (and in some cases, do-able).

What was applied in the changes yesterday to aetherbashing was a cut by 1/3 (not 40%).
For the risk-reward experience balance, aetherbashing was far out of line. It gave far too much reward for two little risk and cost.

Do you have any comments on:
1) Giving us the rest of our essence back from Ascendance (just like people who bought into this system earlier got their essence refunded), and
2) Examining the weights of the rest of the abilities as well (especially Aegis)?
These are the biggest concerns I have left at this point!
Prav2010-08-16 18:16:59
I think the fact that I used to see 3-4 aetherhunts organized a day in my city to now seeing 1 on a good day speaks to the risk/reward now being off in the other direction.
Siphoning, pre-change, was about right in my experience. I found myself asking the question, "Should I join the aetherhunt as a siphoner and get some experience or should I just go bash a few places and get about the same amount and also some gold?"
Now, I doubt I'd join a hunt as a siphoner. I pretty much agree with Gregori that turret experience gain should have been looked at but the remaining roles should have been left relatively untouched.
