All work and no play...

Lots of people work in really interesting places, whether they think so or not. Lots of us also sign onto Lusternia while we're at work!

I work at a tattoo parlour, and in my downtime, I log on to let Siam tell me to write things for the library, to read the news, and to reply to various messages. It's fun work, and I experience a lot of really nifty (and usually bizarre) reactions from clients-- anything from gasps of astonishment to passing out cold upon seeing the needle approaching.

While I was sitting here, at work, avoiding the phone that never stops ringing, I wondered something:

Where do YOU work? What are YOUR fun work-related stories? You get bonus points if any of the stories took place while you were logged onto the game.

I am a nurse so I find that often emergencies take place when I am logged in (supposed to be doing paperwork o.O)

I will usually sit around and do the majority of my writing and scholarly duties while at work in the off time because it is easier for me to do those kind of things when at work. I cant very well be doing defense or combat related stuff if someone comes in with profuse bleeding, or its time to run the narcotics out to the hospice wing. (Rather depressing actually)

Anyways yeah, its a nice escape from the various fluids and germs I am encountering daily.
Fun stories....trying to hold a decent conversation with Elostian while logged in on my Blackberry as a colostomy bag exploded and I am trying to clean up the mess. That was rather disgusting yet hilarious, I finally said - it and had to log out.

I work in a warehouse, putting together book fairs for schools, so I can't be logged in and play while I work. I do however break apart the boringness that is work by writing parts of stories in my head as I go.

I work in two places-- the first doesn't have a computer, and the second does. But the campus network locks out things related to game playing, so I can't log in to Lusternia anyway. Plus, I don't own the computer I work in front of, and can't install any other clients on it.

I work at the Intercontinental Exchange (www.theice.com).

The only times I get to play from work are during loooong nights where we roll out major upgrades and I spend hours on end waiting for other people to do their work.

But I did convince them to let me read the forums, at least =)

I log in sometimes during classes (when in session), I work in a deli when I have a job, so can't log in at work.

Just recently spent a week in the San Juan mountains of southwest Colorado. Far, far outside wifi or the 3G network, I managed to log into Lusternia through the Edge network using my iPhone and the MobileMud app. All while I was 11,000 feet above sea level, camping in my tent. That was the most extreme. Otherwise I am a public school teacher and adjunct professor at the local university. Can't play while teaching...

I can't count the number of times I died in Ethereal raiding primarily because someone came over to my desk to ask me some technical question, preventing me from watching the screen and thus from hitting the (old) divinefire/somersault/etc. escapes. Being the boss doesn't protect you from all the things that interfere with playing from work.
Nepthysia2010-08-19 03:21:12
I work from home currently so I get to play whenever I feel like taking a break. Used to play every now and then from work when I worked at the local Uni's women's center too though.

I'm a steelworker, so I can't play during my work. However, I do tend to get on the forums with my crappy prepaid phone from time to time.

I work cutting steel (16ga to 1 1/2 inch thick) into parts for airport plows. I also cut tubing, drill parts, and move them when the situation warrants.

My job is to operate a Plasma Cutter. Cutting sheets of steel ranging from 98lbs to over a ton. Parts ranging from 1/2 inch square, to 100+lb parts that require a crane to move by union rules.

I work 2nd shift. 2:30 to 11pm

I am currently logged on at the airport. suspicious.gif

(the only way I could look more nerdy is if I was playing WoW here at the terminal)

Currently unemployed, but I work in IT. Could get away with forum reading, maybe a little writing when waiting on something, but certainly not playing the game. While I did have control over the whole network, the fact that I shared an office room with several other people and others walking in means gaming is out of the question.

Looking at getting a second degree since I dislike the office culture, which will be some form of science or medical degree, so I doubt gaming at work will ever be in future.

Interesting thread though, I've often wondered how people do this whole "gaming at work" thing, and jobs with a lot of waiting around do make sense.

I work at my parents petshop, I often log in from there.

Also, I sometimes (like now) check the forums and post on them during classes, but I never log on.

I'm the senior bakery assistant and sometimes pastry chef at a cupcake bakery and the only computers are at the front register and the manager's office. Even on days when I'm in charge, there's never really any time to log on or even check the forums. So like a good company man I just wait 'til I get home. cook.gif

The plasma cutter is how you connect into Lusternia, right?

I work third shift at a Holiday Inn Express as a front desk clerk. My job includes dealing with guests, doing laundry, making breakfast, and janitorial duties.

I login at work all the time.
Fain2010-08-19 12:49:35
I log in only from home. I do sometimes read the forums on my lunchbreak though (when I have a lunchbreak).

When I am working I work on oilfields shooting pigs and riding pipe. I don't get a computer out there so don't log in, but I once mentioned the game to the crew I was working with. They called me McGee for the rest of the week. (Points for those who get the NCIS Reference)

Note: Shooting pigs = taking a short tube that looks like a pig snout attached to a firing mechanism and placing it in the end of a pipe length then shooting it down the pipe. Where it gets stuck is where the welders need to fix their welds.
Riding pipe = laying on a creeper board attached to a cable placing yourself at the end of a larger diameter pipe and shooting yourself down the pipe.. where you get stuck is where the welders need to fix their welds. (you don't actually get stuck but you are looking for defects...also don't take this ride hungover)
