Really? I think a lot of people underrate Eccleston 'cause he was only in it for one season, but I liked his downbeat performance. In fact, after rewatching all of nu-Who follow Tennant's departure, I probably prefer him to Tennant's portrayl, which became increasingly and unnecessarily messianic as the series progressed. "OH YOU KILLED DALEKS YOU ARE SUCH A TERRIBLE CREATURE, I WILL EXILE YOU TO A DIFFERENT UNIVERSE" - compare that to the tortured 9th Doctor waving a gun at a lone Dalek, or contemplating wiping out Earth just to stop the Emperor.
Huge fan of Matt Smith, though. That "oh crap, everything's out of control and I'm not sure what's going on, WING IT WING IT" vibe is refreshing after a season of an antihero followed by three seasons of Jesus Christ in a pinstriped suit.

Oh, Jack, you've confused my hate. I like Eccleston though he isn't my favorite new Doctor. I'm thinking Matt Smith is. All my hate is saved for Billie Piper. I think her character and acting made me just hate her more with every episode. And she could of learned to close her mouth.

leave billie alone
Tennant was my favorite. Episode wise, the "Impossible Planet + Satan Pit" two-parter for its futuristic style and off the wall plot is my fav.

I don't remember this.
I do agree that Tennant's portrayal was becoming too much. There was no way you could keep topping what'd been done before, which was the trend they set with him. That was the same problem I had with Rose; why did they have to keep bringing her back!
And I really like Matt Smith, he reminds me of the First Doctor!

I like Charlie Brooker's summation of her. "Like all of her individual facial features are jostling for supremacy!" Matt Smith is so awesome. Have you seen any of the Doctor Who Confidential things? He's like the worlds biggest, clumsiest fanboy, knocking things other and going "This is SO COOL!"

The Doctor clone. Which was a pretty stupid plot point in and of itself. Totally agree with the topping itself thang, too. RTD's goal seemed to be making each season finale more spectacular than the last, and with more implausibly convenient outs.

Definitely looking forward to this years christmas specials, and wandering around trying to see what places I can go visit.

I think my big reason for not liking matt smith was... there was no explanation to it. When Eccleston was replaced by Tennant they made a whole big deal out of it and showing how the doctor changes. With smitth it was "hey look new into credits layout, new doctor who title cool. Oh hey blue police box crashes into little girls garden.. wait.. who is this guy? Wtf? is going on? uhhh new doctor? uhhh this guy is a dumbass.. wtf?"
Caffrey2010-09-05 10:09:33
I've gone off Tennant now, his acting style was too much by the end. I think Matt Smith is much more entertaining.
Torchwood anyone?
The Face of Boe Captain Jack Harkness is cool and Children of Earth was just awesome. They really didn't pull any punches with that one.
Torchwood anyone?
Shiri2010-09-05 10:11:50
It's like everyone watches it except me, damn.

And Torchwood was amazing, I've heard rumors of it continuing and I'm hoping it's done well considering most of the team is gone.
Estarra2010-09-05 14:27:09
Torchwood rocks! And who doesn't have a crush on Captain Jack!
My favorite Doctor by FAR is Tom Baker. To me, he is the definitive Doctor, distant yet engaging, childlike yet wise--somehow I really believe he is some sort of enlightened alien. Of all Tom Baker shows, I like the Keys to Time which has an amazing story arc (and one storyline was written by Douglas Adams!). His companion at that time is the Time Lady Romana, who is young and inexperienced but extremely educated and book-learned. So there's an interesting dynamic between the Doctor's experience versus Romana's by-the-book perspective. It's also the only time the Doctor had a companion who was truly his equal. Of course, these old school episodes have absolutely terrible special effects and costumes and some people can't get past that.
Of the new Doctors, I think David Tenant was pretty good, though a bit overly emotional for me. I'm having trouble getting into Matt Smith, simply because I prefer my Doctors more mature and he seems to be trying too hard at times to make up for that. For some reason, I had also thought they were leading up to Catherine Tate becoming the next Doctor which would have been an absolutely brilliant move and I was extremely disappointed with how they wrapped up her story arc and we ended up with Matt Smith instead.

He's just an awesome dude. I loved Torchwood. Watched much of the first season. Missed so many other episodes though, since I lost cable and don't spend much time watching shows on the internet, and unsure if I could find any episodes. I think I saw parts of Children of Earth, I know the general story though.

They made a huge deal about it-- they made a two-hour 'movie'. Just wasn't part of the normal season.
Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars (not the death of the Doctor but another episode, essentially)
Doctor Who: The End of Time (2-disc movie thingy which resolves that whole "drumbeat" thing that was presaged throughout the series as his doom).
I got them from Netflix.

Yeah, he burst into flame and everything. The last few seconds are Matt Smith yelling "Geronimo!"
Ssaliss2010-09-05 19:46:17
Yep. Aside from the whole "reincarnating" thing, I love that arc.
EDIT: Also, I'm kinda looking forward to what's going to happen when he runs out of lives... He's already used his tenth regeneration, right? Meaning he's got two more to go... and since I doubt Matt Smith will last for very long, there's just one more after him. I've got my theories, but it'll be interesting to see nonetheless.

There's always been theories that the Doctor will discover the way to extend regenerations.
Ssaliss2010-09-05 22:15:06
It'll still be interesting to see
It is rather amazing though, having eleven actors so far playing the same role. Makes me wonder if the series will ever stop...

There were another two specials before that, as well. The Next Doctor (which was on Christmas '08) and Planet of the Dead (Easter '09). I don't think they were that great, though David Morrissey was in the former, and is a pretty damn good actor.

Agreed. Also, City of Death. Inspector frigging Duggan. Best not-companion ever.
