Anywhos, here's the dealio!

What I've been doing (and in practice spars, has worked out quite well), is timing ectoplasm with shackles, order writhe/crucify, demon hits with scabies right after, shrivel once, cross breaks, demon breaks, sacrifice.

When it's on, it's pretty on. But when it's off, my sacrifice goes through riiiiiight after they writhe off the cross. Here, deathmark is built up to 15. I hit with ectoplasm blindly, hoping it sticks. Scabies hits (he cures it, however). I order writhe/crucify. Etc. Sac goes through too slow.

What boggles me is that when I do it right, it works quite well. But I don't know why. ]

Also, when timing the ectoplasm with shackles, should it hit right before shackles, or right after? If you are off balance and get hit with ectoplasm, is that balance loss increased? Or, do you have to be ecto'd before the balance loss? (If this last question is answered, I'm fairly certain I know where I went wrong.)

Edit(Afterthought): Can you cleanse while entangled?

Ectoplasm wouldn't increase balance loss that happened before it hits. And if you hit somebody with ectoplasm before, they would just cleanse it first, unless you got the timing down real close. That is, if shackles stops cleansing. Does it?

And no, can not cleanse while entangled.

For Lehkis notes, Shackles is an entangle with a different writhe, but still counts for 'entangled'!

The issue I see is your scabies didn't tick else he would have likely not gotten off. Did he tackle you out of contagion?

Edit: also, no, shackles is its own affliction like hangedman is it's own affliction. But, yes, has a longer writhe than typical entangle

Snippet from a log of Shamarah vs. Mariello (http://nogfx.org/logs/656). (Been studying them like mad, as they're the only Nihilist logs I've been able to find from the Nihilist's perspective.)

Background: First part of the fight was darkening the mark. Mariello is ecto'd, but has not cleansed. I know there are no timestamps so it might be difficult to answer, but here's the question: Mariello is crucified, then gets afflicted with scabies (bolded demon line). Shamarah gets a shrivel off, then Mariello's scabies tick.

On this scabies tick, is it robbing Mariello of balance BEFORE he writhes, or is it interrupting his writhe (is that even possible?). If it is robbing him BEFORE he writhes, I know my failures have been strictly due to jumping the gun (which will give myself a bit of a clearer head in a fight!).

Scabies tick causes you to lose balance. You must have balance before you can even start to writhe from crucify. If they start to writhe and then scabies ticks, well that doesn't matter because you won't stop it. Scabies throws you off balance preventing you from writhing.

Lucky for you I am lurking the forums of a game I don't play anymore instead of doing work.

Vathael is correct about the balance-loss, of course. If scabies/epilepsy tick after they've already started writhing the writhe won't stop, so there is really a fairly narrow window in which they need to tick (like 6 or 7 seconds, I think, assuming ectoplasm + forced writhe + max deathmark + crucify).

Something that's going on in that log that you can't see is that before the start of the fight I did a trick with my demon so that it would attack immediately when I told it to. Demons attack on a static timer (8 seconds, I think?) and if you set them passive during that time, they will freeze at whatever point they were at on that timer. So after summoning my demon I would have it attack me, then 7.9 seconds after it first hit I would set it passive. Then, when I ordered it to attack the enemy during my crucify combo, I could be 100% positive that the enemy would be afflicted with both scabies and epilepsy without having any chance to cure, and with the balance loss from the forced writhe and the crucify it was almost guaranteed that one of the two afflictions would tick at some point, keeping them off-balance long enough for me to shrivel twice and sacrifice. The downside to this method, of course, is that you have to stick ectoplasm without the help of your demon (since if you set it aggressive, you'll screw up the timing) meaning you'll probably have to bait a long-balance attack or win a pingwar or force a tumble or something.

I know it's hard. Nihilist is a lot trickier than it looks, but on the other hand, it's one of the few classes that actually does reward creativity, especially if you can pull something out of your ass that your opponent hasn't seen before. Maybe you'll figure out your own mechanics-exploiting trick along these lines!

Bonus fun fact: Did you know that crucify's break-ticks are based on the game engine time, not on the time you casted it? ( WHY DO I STILL REMEMBER THIS AFTER NOT PLAYING LUSTERNIA FOR MONTHS)

How long is the time between being afflicted with scabies/epilepsy, and scabies/epilepsy ticking?

How do you use a forced tumble? I assume you force the tumble/ecto, follow and crucify, but I'm a little fuzzy on it.

It's random (each has a X% chance to tick every Y seconds, where X and Y are numbers that I can't remember but which are different for each affliction), which is why it's so important to stack the odds in your favor.


Well, tumble just happens to be an action with a particularly long balance time so that you can easily ectoplasm without them recovering balance. You can also force bury, dig, or a number of other things. The hard part is catching them on-balance so that it goes through.

Incidentally, crucify will cancel the target's tumble in progress when casted (and is fairly unique in this regard, only a few other skills do this).

Just tested with Teruelle.

Crucify will not stop the tumble.

EDIT: I could have just read report 264.

This was changed. It now prevents a tumble from starting, but does not stop an initiated tumble.

The exact same thing happened with Brenon, too. Two limbs on shrivel, one limb on cross, one limb from demon. Only thing I can think of is the crucify break or demon break is hitting a limb that's already broken... but that has NEVER happened before (at least to me.)

Could have been the Psymet skill that lets you resist broken limbs, or some form of passive curing.

(Dunno if the Psymet skill is breakleg only or if shrivel/crucify is included.)

Also, about the deathmark sense thing - I shouldn't have to. Unless I'm missing something very, very major, all of the sudden what was working perfectly the last two nights has just stopped working. I'm wondering if perhaps the mechanics of something is throwing me off. The same thing just happened again versus Wuylinfe in the FFA.
