Novice Warrior Weapons

We've all seen them*. The novice who comes out of the portals in another guild, or even guildless, and decides to become a Warrior.

They come armed with their trusty pack, their gray tunic and trousers, their set of three vials... but what is this that they are missing? They do not have a weapon! No, the novice claymore is reserved solely for those who join a warrior guild straight from the Portal.

Alas, their life is so much more difficult than those of their brethren who are more self-assured, more knowledgeable, and know where they wish to go when they create their character. The less fortunate kick those finks and gnomes, eying with envy the large claymores hefted about by their supposed peers.

But wait! There is an alternative! Each of these guilds has a tutor. Such a tutor should be as capable of providing a novice claymore as the Portal of Fate upon request, to those who are Freshman Novices within a warrior guild. These claymores would, of course, have only the 5-day decay rate and not allow the novice to request more than one at a time (because what would a novice do with multiple swords?)

* Those of us who are in warrior guilds and deal with novices, at least!

Essentially: Telling a novice that they should suicide and recreate so that they can get their weapon is rather weird, and getting the gold to buy a weapon when they can get one so much easier by suiciding / recreating (and then using that gold on other essentials instead while also being able to hunt much better) is also weird. There should be a way for these newbies to actually get one of the 5-day-decay weapons to play with while they get their feet under them.

This would be nice, I know for my guild there's not always someone around. We have a weapons rack, but it's kind of emptying since no one is actively working on it, so this would also help because a rack of weapons isn't an obvious thing.

So, ramble aside because it's late, yes please! biggrin.gif

I know the Serenguard keep a supply of cheap shortswords for this very reason, but it's a drain on the guild resources.

Rack of weapons also has the potential issue of someone walking in, going "Oo, shinies!" and taking them all. sad.gif

Especially if the weapons are smeltable.

I guess this explains why the SG weapons are all wooden. Also, most warrior guilds will hunt you down and make your life miserable if they catch you stealing stuff...

Yeah, I can see someone running and doing that. It would make me cry, because of comm changes. sad.gif

Yeah, how many people do the Serenguard keep sitting at their rack making sure nobody steals anything from it? tongue.gif

It's pretty tough to catch someone stealing from it. If you lock it, then you're relying on people with keys being around (which they are not always). Otherwise it's a free depot. Essentially it's a lot of extra overhead for something that shouldn't be necessary, y'know?

We used to have a rack. We ended up having to keep it locked much of the time. sad.gif

so long as bard guilds can get those cheap lutes from our tutors, sure.

but shouldn't we be shunning them alongside monks? ninja.gif

NEVER!

But seriously, sure. If weapons are provided for people coming out of the intro, they should have a way to request said weapon if they join the guild in another manner (and are still a novice freshman).

i fully support this idea. one game I've played lets you ASK TUTOR EQUIPMENT as a novice to get basic supplies.

playing devil's advocate here.....doing the collegium quests gives you 1k per, and any novice can do any org's quests, especially influence. see where I'm getting at?

Or you just stock it with really cheap things that no one wants to steal. We haven't had much trouble with it.

alternately, artisans need novice instruments, around capable in skill rank.

run with that.

This idea gets my vote.

Unless you're looking for another option?

Perhaps you missed where I stated that it's better to just suicide and start over than to waste gold (in this case, 2500 gold) on buying weapons?

They can spend the time earning up that 2500 gold bashing with a weapon instead of trying to kick, and then they can use that 2500 gold on other stuff that makes bashing even easier.

As I said, it makes no sense.
Lendren2010-09-26 00:33:35
Maybe Bob just needs to carry the novice starter kit claymores, since his lutes are essentially identical to the starter lutes (though oddly their name is different).
Xavius2010-09-26 19:58:35
Or Bob's weapons could be much cheaper with a shorter decay time.
Everiine2010-09-26 20:06:04
That is a pretty ridiculous price.
