This isn't really an issue in Lusternia, though. I've watched several plays on my halli-alt and I had to log on and purposely walk up there to look at the stage to figure out what the fuss was about.
Frequently an issue with people that go out of their way to make themselves "ugly" in descs, too. I just imagine them looking vaguely normal and speaking in normal English accents until proven otherwise.

Design messages! I no longer need to do the cartel enternamehere list scramble anymore to see what designs were accepted/rejected! Wheeeeeeeeee.
This, can now stop the obsessive checking and spend that time on something else.

Not everyone can like everything.
Actually, in real life I probably wouldn't be that fond of Serenwilde's stage, either. (Though I do really like the way I did the balcony.) My real-world theater experiences and preferences have been far more minimalist bordering on spartan. What I like from a stage is that the audience doesn't even see it. So the last thing it needs is curlicues or vivid colors or other ornamentation. It should be a blank canvas.

*Ahem* I think I fail at this particular prerequisite.

We (both Lendren and myself) live in a state where the theaters tend to be very minimalistic and understated, on the whole. It's more about the actors and the performance than the environment, at least in the ones I've been to.

Back in Ohio, we had a mix. The Ohio Theater looked pretty similar to that pic (except smaller), but the more modern stages are all pretty plain. I'm not sure how it is out here in Seattle.

Nothing wrong with how you like it. Just not how I like it.
The only theater I've done where I live now was in a venue that is... well, plain compared to your picture, but still ornate, with lots of what seemed to me were distractions from what the play was supposed to be about. The production itself was also more distractions than substance, which is not the fault of the opera house, just of the particular director, who not only didn't have any artistic integrity but didn't even realize anything was missing. It was a bad experience, especially compared to the theater work I'd previously done in Juneau, Alaska, for a profoundly amazing company that you probably wouldn't always call minimalist -- when they did do props and such, they were often pretty extravagant -- but who didn't do a lot of them, and every single detail on every single one was there for a particular reason, and everywhere there wasn't a reason for something, there wasn't something.
Since then, I've seen good theater done on bare stages (or stages full of weird constructs made of PVC pipe and neon glow-sticks), and good theater done on elaborate stages with period costume and tons of complicated props. I've also seen awful theater in both styles. But on average, the former tend to be more likely to be good, at least to my tastes.
But I've got nothing against people who like gilt stages and big production numbers and sequins better. There's an art to that, too.

Working on Nihmriel's play and rediscovering how funny it is. Somehow I can only imagine Robert Downy Jr. playing Lord Eepex. Just you wait.
