A slightly different note, I decided to try some forging, and churned out a 51/120/280 straight off the bat. No mallet. Microscopic odds, from what I've gathered based on forum lurking in forging threads o.o!
For whatever reason, getting 280 speed weapons was a semi-decent probability; churning out hunting weapons took a lot less time than a good fighting weapon.
One could make a pair in a day of forging.
