My manse has an indoor enchanter's pentagram, then the fulcrux is outdoors, then the ship is indoors but still outdoors themed.

The Yantra is supposed to be like a big sandstone temple, all outdoors, with gardens and reservoirs and a vast plane of emptiness beyond the outer walls. But I explain it IC by saying there's illusion generators belowdecks that make the ship appear like something other than a ship. And presumably if you went belowdecks you'd see the cold, sterile panels and machinery of the ship.

I just can't get into the really out there "I have a flying house" or "My forest flies around slaying creatures" stuff. If I make an aethership, it's going to look like the Weatherlight.

I like to imagine that ships look like the ship Heart of Gold in the Hitchhiker's series, after it's been changed in the explosion over the planet that makes other planets. (in the book, not the movie...)

I don't really think about what the outside of ships look like, unless they're especially evocative, like Avaerin (floating forest in a bubble, a la Silent Running) or Deepnight (floating city in a bubble) or Arachnid (a really big spider, like Shadow Battleships from Babylon 5). For stuff like Nierrta or Methrenton's Hammer, I just imagine so kind of generic spaceship thing.
