On the plus side, a flare at a reasonable-ish time meant we actually had a few decent people around.

On the minus side, a flare at a reasonable-ish time meant that Celest and Glomdoring had a metric censor.gif ton of decent people around. sad.gif You just can't win! (I mean that in the most amiable way possible.)

EDIT: I also don't count myself amongst the 'decent people,' by the way! I know just enough to bombard, fire, maybe heal hull and modules of basic damage.

I firmly believe that what Glomdoring and Celest had were experienced people, being prepared, and good leaders. I give them props for winning those aetherrings.

I feel any City/Commune can do it... And yes, you can win!
Ileein2011-05-16 03:56:20
Yes, preparation was a major factor, as well as lack of practice.

But what I meant was, when there are few people around because of non-peak time, small orgs are hampered more than big ones, while when there are lots of people around because of peak times, big orgs benefit from this more than small ones! That's something no administrative action can fix, it's just an unfortunate fact of life.
Aithera2011-05-16 04:04:33
I was amused watching Viynain at the aetherplex whistling more ships than Hallifax had people participating in the flare.

Isn't that how it works with villages, wildnodes, events, or... well, anything?

PS: Hallifax has more people than Glomdoring. So does Gaudiguch. This is disappointing. sad.gif

It's about quality, not quantity. Glomdoring has a large number of people that have been around for a long time, and are very dedicated to certain aspects of the game. Halli/Gaudi may have more people but we have no clue what we're doing! And a fair amount of those people have no interest in anything involving combat. I don't know how it is in Gaudiguch, but Hallifax's RP attracts a different set of people, who may see combat as secondary. I love these people, and they're great to have around, but they don't help one bit in revolts/domoths/flares. Personally, I'm a bit tired of hearing that Glomdoring has less players, so we should be able to do it too. Maybe if we had a core group of people who have been around for almost five years, but we don't. It will be quite some time before we can even think about holding our own in those sorts of things.

Please don't read this as bitter complaining. I promise, it's not. I love Hallifax, and I love the people we have. I also really enjoy the learning experience of everything being fairly new to us. We don't do very well, it's true, but we learn a bit each time, and put what we learn into practice the next time. It's a slow process, and that's fine with me. I don't want someone to swoop in, take control, and tell us how to do everything. That would take the fun out of it! I am pretty happy with how things stand in Hallifax right now.
Arel2011-05-16 04:39:56
I don't think most of the big name Gloms have been around for five years, except Xenthos. I think they are successful because they have what Xiel calls "e-dedication" and they are a lot more e-dedicated than most.
Ytran2011-05-16 04:40:48
^Basically agreeing with the above. More people getting interested/involved would be amazing, but the way we're learning/working at stuff is good. No one really expects us to go into these things and walk away with flawless victories, but we have fun and we learn and we do a little bit better the next time until we get good enough to start winning sometimes.

Which is basically how this is meant to work.

EDIT: Above is not @ Arel.
Aithera2011-05-16 04:42:39
although if certain people had been around we could easily have had at least twice as many of us.

Also boo at all the people that didn't participate.

But I had fun, and definitely learned some stuff so yay.

It's a small price to pay for your personal time and sanity.

Also, yay I wanna code stuff.

You do know that I'll be bugging you on a constant basis again right? Mudlet irc has been barren past few months.

Quick reacting and the ability to bs your way to victory.
When it went off, a few of us were on Xion, getting pendants. Then we ran to Dramube, and me and my ingame wife got stuck on the bubble. I hadn't setup a certain thing, so my watch didn't go off fully, and got chased for a few seconds, then died. I barely got to participate. sad.gif

What the- why am I ALWAYS ASLEEP? I take a freak nap today because I was hit with a wave of "sleepy headache", and a flare happens. This is so not right.

That's what you get for sleeping.

I hear you. I'm still learning the ends and outs of being a leader. Originally, I just wanted to play Lusty from time to time and enjoy creating my little niche in this amazing world (i.e. designing, creating new lore, hunting, building a manse, etc) And then I'm 'convinced' (*suckered*) to go for CL. For the crap that's thrown at me, as a player, I really enjoy it (However, the downside is when a raid happens everyone starts following *me* because of the title....).

As what someone told me and I believe as well, people need to understand that Lusternia is not a "MMO". There is no point and click to everything. There is a learning curve that takes time and usually the goal is not what is important but the enjoyment in learning (as you said). I hope you do take it slow and that every opportunity helps you enjoy the game even more. I know I do... From what I see on the outside, Hallifax has a solid playerbase to achieve just about anything.

That's understandable... I think most people were surprised. I know I was... I was expecting the flare to happen in three more rl days at least and it hit at the beginning of the year. Go figure. Always next year!

Hallifax is like what, less than a year-old org. And we're hardly in a losing position, infact, I'd say we're doing very well for ourselves lately. Give it a rest! Of course we aren't going to have a bunch of villages, aetherbubbles, and demigods with millions of power to spare. Those things don't drop into your lap overnight.
Unknown2011-05-16 08:48:59
Epic e-victories come with a RL price, though I imagine it'll be cheaper now that summer's rolling in.

P.S. this sig is pretty entertaining.

They're over a year old now, they came out the christmas before last.

It really is. I was stuck watching for it a minute or so, while browsing old threads.

This. I would like to request that the code for flares be double checked. I think there's a bug causing them to only happen when I'm in bed.

Hardly bugging me... and since it's been last September or so since I was able to touch mudlet for long, it may be me bugging you at the beginning =P
