If you've got accent aliases, for Isune's sake don't forget to toggle them off when you're on a different character.

Speech therapy, go!

We've got flipping magitech, I'm sure there is some sort of super advanced speech therapy you can go to, and fix an accent in a jiffy.

I'm sorry, accents are not something to be 'fixed' everyone has them.
Enyalida2012-08-27 21:27:00
I protest, you can decidedly neutralize an accent. If it's at the point where it's either a) very noticeable or B) impeding communication in some fashion, it's entirely possible to speak (with some effort/training/help) in a much more neutral way, using more standard (for the area, at least) language.
Ytran2012-08-27 22:20:07
Misspelling things in says or tells or aethers is not indicative of an accent anyway.

Actually, it's pretty common IRL for accents to change over time. Or to be purposefully trained out. Some jobs (like TV or Sales jobs) require it in fact. So, ICly, it might still be there, but there's no reason it couldn't tone down or only come out when upset or something.
Lendren2012-08-28 10:51:32
Anything that's not fun for you or for the people around you has to stop. Sometimes it's hard finding a reason, but this one's not that hard.

IC, it's especially weird to have a verbal accent over a telepathic communication lane.

Not that weird. Accents exist in the mind, as well. People with them may or may not realize it, but they 'think' in their accent as well.
Enyalida2012-08-28 14:51:21
I think in a really bad southern accent from time to time, when I'm having un-charitable thoughts. It's more the stuttering/lisping 'accents' and various other speech related impediments that come across as really strange telepathically.

I was not arguing the accents fade, (But that is a function of age as well. My daughter who spent the first five years in wales, and only four in the US has no hint of a Welsh accent anymore... I on the other hand have not lost a bit of my accent yet.) I was arguing that the idea of accents needing fixing was grossly offensive and ethnocentric
And Lendren, it is not fun being jumped by random people, or having to grind to get to level 100. So those should be changed so that I can have fun? Let the person with the accent have his or her accent. They'll either get bored with it, or get tired of people complaining at them. This is a roleplaying game and some people believe accents are part of that. Let them have their fun as well.

Eh.
Problem: Accent getting annoying.
Solution (Or 'Fix' for the problem): Remove or minimize accent.
Never said that my way of speaking was 'correct' (I actually dislike my own recorded voice in many ways), but if something is causing problems, the solution to it is to find a way to fix the problem, accents included.
Eventru2012-08-28 16:27:30
Oh well. It's not really relevant to the topic (Quotes!), so let's move on.
(For the record, I have just about 0 accent and I think accents are sexy. Mmmm.)

Of course I've never heard you talk at all, but you might have even though you sound the same to you and even to your friends in the US. I bet family and friends in Wales would be able to point out differences. I could be wrong, of course. I'm just basing this on the friends I have from the New England area (I have a couple of friends from Massachusetts who've been living in the South for several years now) who sound hilarious to me, and the same to themselves, but when they go home for holidays, their family pokes fun at them because of the tiny bit of accent they've picked up.
It's different for different people too. Some people's accents blend more quickly than others naturally. I actually pick up new accents pretty quickly. Because I've moved around so much, my accent is kind of muddled. It probably isn't noticeable by Northerners, but other people from the South are always, "What state are you from?" And when I tell them I've lived in them all, they're not surprised and always say that I sound like it.
But none of this is quotes so I'll hush. I will add that I don't think anyone was trying to be grossly offensive or ethnocentric. The comment on 'fixing' the accent was in response to the one about how one's own accent is annoying to oneself. I think it was more about fixing the situation of being painted into an accent corner, so to speak, than in the idea that accents themselves are in need of fixing.
