So! I decided to pop on my Celestian, check out the news and see if I had been kicked by metagamers yet! (I've still survived! )
I expected the same old news telling people that Celest is amazing, blah blah blah. So imagine my surprise when I saw this!
Is it a good idea for a city to do something like this? What do you think?
Edit: And now I realize I typo'd in the name! Oh my.

Subj: New City Credit Program
Citizens:
The Star Council has approved a new program for the benefit of our
citizens.
In order to ensure all citizens have the opportunity to better protect
themselves in battle, the city will be offering city credits for
purchase to be used exclusively to attain a system of reflexes from
certified trainers.
This program will make up to 75 city credits available at any time
(assuming enough stock) to be purchased by citizens of city rank 3 or
above. This is a one time purchase regardless of how many are bought. So
if you buy 60 today you cannot buy 15 in a couple of months. The credits
will be transferred directly from the city to the certified trainer on
your behalf.
The full details of the program can be seen in CHELP CREDITS. The Lord
Marshall will be taking recommendations for trainers from now into the
forseeable future. Project 176 will track purchases and eligible
trainers and their system of reflexes.

I think it's good to encourage people in this way, kind of a two sided thing bordering on OOC but really helpful for those who might not otherwise know or raise the credits in order to do it as quickly as this is probably going to allow.
Unknown2010-10-27 13:00:38
I think that its a good initiative, as only those who are truly new combatants would need a system, and it seems like the scheme prevents people from simply buying cheap bulk credits for their own use. However, shouldn't budding combatants focus on getting essential skills, especially since there are free systems like Treant?
Also, are there any systems that currently cost more than 60 credits? At the moment, I can only think of Vadi's m&m, which is 60 credits. What will the extra 15 credits be for, if it is to be transferred directly to the system creators? In addition, what happens if someone pays enough for just 20 credits, which is currently insufficient for a system? Do they get a system anyway? Do they get the credits? Or are the credits lost?
Perhaps to counter that, instead of saying that they are selling credits to purchase a system, why not directly sell the system? In other words, say, CR3 and above and spend 250k gold for a system. That way, there will be no question of over- or under-purchase of credits.
Also, I agree with diamondais that it is borderline OOC, although it seems to be a necessary evil. I thought that maybe calling it a training regime for combat reflexes instead of calling it a system, but there might be some who might confuse it as merely lecture-style lessons, so maybe to eliminate any ambiguity, calling it a system may be necessary.

Definitely borderline OOC, though well worded to keep it IC of that line.
A good idea though, i like that systems will be listed to people, there'll be a lot of people that don't know about the systems or which one is most suitable. And good move to direct transfer. Though i hope it doesn't bite them in the butt.. Buying systems for people only to have it turned on them later, if they leave Celest.
Why'd i have to leave before they thought up this...

It's borderline ooc- and it doesn't really matter if they leave Celest. Catarin wants to help players get involved and unfortunately, the use of a curing system is necessary for those who want to play at a higher level or even keep playing Lusternia. The normal credit sales lets people buy up to 60 or more, if it lasts for 2 years. Which they usually do. So- problem? Lol.
Faymar2010-10-27 13:36:18
Sorry, but I can't help myself.
WTF?!
You do know there is a free system out there, don't you?
It looks like a handout so people would make alts to defend Celest.
Not to mention it's ooc, but who cares about that these days?

Malicia2010-10-27 13:38:52
No comment on the free system bit. I'll just say that a system with support is better than one without if you consider the rabid-rapid rate of change in Lusternian combat. And your concern is without logic and premature. Who in the world would create alts to defend an org...? Doesn't that seem dumb?
Unknown2010-10-27 13:43:17
Edit: Alright, acknowledged your point about support for systems.
Hence I ask:
Edit:
I think they've already thought of that:

They can use the extra for whatever they like, I'm sure. 15cr put towards some skills or whatever. Or maybe they'll sell for gold. Or whatever people do with credits. Who has time to monitor it? Its the program's intent that's most important. People abuse city credit sales all the time. I hear the admin keep an eye on those who buy and then transfer to alts but who knows? So much alt abuse going on in Lusty it isn't even funny. Celest is plagued with alts. And if they do purchase 20, they could hold on to it until they have enough to purchase a system. I'd personally wait to buy more...wouldn't that make more sense? There's no time limit (yet). If you buy less than what you need at such an amazing price, you've only shot yourself in the foot.
Treant is without support and has flaws that other coders have been/will have to sort out. Ilyarin and Nydekion are building off of that (Max, it's called) and may offer it when done. There's Vadi's and other people who're building in a different client.

Hrm, that doesn't seems to be what the newspost said. It mentioned that the credits would be a one-time purchase, and even gave the example of how buying 60 credits means you are not eligible to purchase 15 more at a later time. Also, it mentioned that the credits would be directly transferred to the system creator, which helps in terms of alt abuse and focusing the effect on upcoming combatants. However, the two measures mentioned above brings up questions of what happens if you over-purchase or under-purchase credits.

It looks to me (I've really not paid much attention to it) like Celest is attempting to offer noncombatants the opportunity to become involved in conflict. Obviously, the pool of PvPers in Lusternia grows slowly, because of its difficulty to get into. People, like Vadi, who offer systems for (relatively) low cost (60cr doesn't seem terribly much to me in the grand scheme) and support for it are (in my opinion!) helping people who aren't coders get into it.
Similarly, it looks like Catarin and Celest are trying to encourage people to take advantage of it.
If that means Celest suddenly has five or six or ten or fifteen people who now are at least moderately decent fodder who'll survive more than a couple hits, it seems like a grand idea.
(As an aside, the 'problem' with free systems (not to speak to any particularly) is that the support on them has a tendency to be minimal. For people who don't know how to code or fix it or tweak it, they probably would be better off with a system that has someone to go to for support/help)
Besides, it's Celest's credits. If they wanted to sell them on the market then give the gold to fish, so be it.
Let's be careful on how you broach the topic, hm?
Edit: And if Celest suspects someone is just farming credits from the city for alts, they can send an e-mail to support or file an issue, and it can be investigated. Obviously, alt abuse is a shrubbable and bannable offense. It's caught often enough, and is caught more often the more suspicions are reported.

I won't lie, while I'm a touch uncomfortable with the borderline-OOCness, if Hallifax had something like this (and if I had the gold, which I don't) I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'm sharply limited by my code-ineptitude; if I had a supported system like m&m, I'd very probably be more willing to take part in routine combat.

It's all been worked out. You buy what you need, depending on what system you'll buy. This program is also great incentive for the coders out there that want to make some credits. Anyways, I don't really see what the fuss is. Catarin may comment on it later.

Who are the certified trainers?
I can only think of one person that has a system for sale that's somewhat reasonable, and that would be Vadi.
The lolwut comment for my post: this is a Vadi-get-rich scheme.
The serious stuff: I do appreciate the initiative, regardless of the OOCness and ability to abuse.

Sahmiam is just upset I skipped out on the two chances he's offered me to give him the system for free. It's okay, Sahmiam.
