The Steam holiday sale just started today. There are a TON of indie game packs on sale for $5 a piece right now.

Iji It's awesome

If the TVtropes link up there scares you, allow me to explain. Iji is a 2D shooting game, and also a deconstruction of the genre. While you're free to walk through complex levels and blast everything to bits with tons of incredible weapons, the game deals with the issues of war, killing and how they effect a person. The story of the game plays out slightly differently depending on if you do a pacifist run, or kill everything that moves. And there's a lot of sad moments in the game too. Even the average Lusternian ought to feel a sting deep inside the chest at some points during the game.

I felt a sting, alright, trying to kill maximum charge Tor. Ridiculously frigging hard.

Difficulty is fun! Tor is an awesome fight.

Machinarium. It comes with the Humble Indie Bundle.

I also found Puzzle Agent to be fun if you like the Professor Layton games. Recettear is also awesome, but I'm a sucker for those kinds of games.

Finished it! (And a lot of other free indie games - that's what comes of a job with lots of downtime and an internet connection.) But there's a difference between difficult-but-rewarding platforming and flogging your penis with barbed wire.

How could you forget Plants vs Zombies?

I second World of Goo as previously mentioned. I watched someone stream it the other day and I was reminded how good the music is.
