Bookbinding Upgrade!

Back to Common Grounds.

I was so busy reading stuff, I almost forgot I was writing! Ok, one word.

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

And more squeeeeeee

And back to making things. One stationery design done, now to the city cartel!

Wow so cool! I'm trying to absorb how this all works.

So the origami can all be folded into different types of animals or natural objects, and each one does something different?

And by the sounds of the action origami, only the bookbinder can scribe a message... what about the customer who buys it from a shop and wants to write their own message into it?

There's no necessary correspondence between the shape (dragon, star, crane, etc.) and the function -- you can make a design that uses any of the shapes to be any of the four types. So you could have kirigami dragons, and action origami snakes, and kirigami snakes; it's up to the trademasters to make them however they like.

Yeah, they'd have to get a bookbinder to do it, same way you need to hire a jeweler to engrave a ring.

Can someone post the Eventru made design so we can get a feel for it? Are they supposed to look like the neat link Lendren posted, or are they more like traditional cylindrical-esque stamp seals?

a royal signet stamp

Shining metals make up a royal signet stamp left behind here.
Examined:
With enough heft to fill a hand, this stamp is made solidly from gold
and silver. It resembles a handle from some tool, only thicker, and with
the lower end mostly flat apart from a symbol resembling a crown,
designed to press this image onto paper.
Seal_Text:
A royal crown is emblazoned in red ink, surrounded by a thin circle.

Ooh I see. Oh wait, the wet fold origami helps all influencing attacks and the kirigami does damage resist, increased damage, AND more criticals? ohmy.gif I thought it could only do one of each and that each animal did something different. Makes much more sense now. That's awesome!
Ileein2010-12-30 21:39:59
C'mon, seal design! You know it's awesome, reviewers! *rally*

Shouldn't be long, the public stationery I submitted already got accepted.

Lendren has the right of it - it's an asian-influenced stamp/chop/seal. The seals you're probably talking about are more european, and use wax.

Yes! jumpfire.gif

All this while when Estarra had been saying no to Bookbinding changes, she was actually secretly noting down all of the Bookbinding ideas raised! wub.gif

Now I am very very tempted to switch back to Bookbinding!

Also:
QUOTE (ActionOrigami AB)
Note that origami can be folded by a skilled bookbinder in any location, since there is no need for a press for the act of folding vellum into origami.

QUOTE (ModularOrigami AB)
Items that could be stored in a rift will, if the holder has the appropriate skill and enough room, automatically go into the rift instead.

Very neat aspects to the origami.

I was kind of confused when Eventru mentioned he was gonna make ~28 designs, I thought there were ~28 different types of origami. I'd like to design my own origami but apparently you must base this on a pre-existing 'animal'? Shulamit tried to make a kitten origami but was rejected since it doesn't exist yet. So my guess is that you have to make variations based on those pre-existing designs.
Eventru2010-12-30 22:08:19
Just as a note, when it comes to seals:

Appearance: an official Institute seal
Dropped: An official Institute seal chills here.
Examined: Man, what a seal!
seal_text: This is a seal of the Institute, and Ileein is here dressed like a woman, even if he isn't.

^ Not okay.

Seal_text: A shield is emblazoned in deep red ink with a crooked-headed owl with the word 'who' in small script.

^ Okay.

So: An org's name shouldn't be in the seal_text, but it's fine to have it on the appearance/dropped.

There are 7 types of origami shapes you can make (right now):

Crane, Hippogriff, Package, Star, Flame, Snake, Dragon.

You're welcome to compile a list of popular shapes/animals/etc and start a thread (with a poll!) and see what are popular choices, and we can see about having them added in as origami patterns.

(The thing with making kitten origami with an existing pattern is that it won't be targettable as 'kitten' but rather 'dragon' (or whichever you choose as a pattern)!)

*cackle* Here's the right way to do it.

Item: Stamp Type: Stamp Org: Public
Commodities: gold 5 wood 5

Mortal Reviews: Allowed
IMPORTANT: The main noun MUST use one of these: STAMP, CHOP, SEAL
Appearance:
an official Institute seal
Dropped:
An official seal of the Matrix Research Institute rests weightily here.
Examined:
This elegant and weighty official seal is crafted from deepest ebony and
inlaid with gold, giving it a formal and dignified appearance. The ebony
has been shaped into a smooth and rounded handle, which tapers slightly
as it descends for ease of grip. The base of the seal is a wide disc
embossed with the arms of the Institute, with which documents are
stamped, while the knob at the top of the handle is inlaid with a
miniature version of that same seal in gold, providing a visual of the
end result of stamping a document. Two intricately-carved owls perch at
the base of the handle, their wings wrapping about its girth and their
eyes gleaming with subtly-inlaid gold.
Seal_Text:
A shield is emblazoned in deep red ink, three feathers occupying the top right corner and an
intricate mandala inscribed opposite. The shield is crested with a swan adorned with a mortarboard
and tassel and framed by two detailed owls. A parchment scroll unfurls along the shield's base, the
tiny words 'Take nobody's word for it' discernable thereon.
Sealholder: Institute (organization)
Comments:

And here's how it shows up:

This sheet of stationery is made of the finest quality paper, dyed a
pale blue. Slightly darker blue rule lines, spaced generously down the
page, help guide the hand to scribe neatly. The sheet is rolled into a
loose cylinder.
It has 27 months of usefulness left.
It weighs 1 ounce(s).
A sheet of pale blue stationery is holding:
Nothing.
The seal of the Matrix Research Institute is stamped onto the page: A shield is emblazoned in deep
red ink, three feathers occupying the top right corner and an intricate mandala inscribed opposite.
The shield is crested with a swan adorned with a mortarboard and tassel and framed by two detailed
owls. A parchment scroll unfurls along the shield's base, the tiny words 'Take nobody's word for it'
discernable thereon.

The above appears also at the end of the document when READing it.

So don't mention the org, just use their symbol. Sounds like a plan.
Shulamit2010-12-30 22:13:05
You can target them with origami too, eh? Well, I'mma going back to designing letters. Letters, I understand letters.
Daraius2010-12-30 22:19:04
So tempted to switch back to bookbinding but poor Daraius has just got too much going on for any distractions. laugh.gif

Loooove the new options. Thanks Estarra!!
Ileein2010-12-30 22:24:09
It's ok, I'll make you lots of goodies.

On topic, one more question: how big must a family be for an organizational seal to be made for it? For non-Banner/Great House families, who is important enough to count as a sealholder?
Unknown2010-12-30 23:54:59
We cannot preserve letters? Big dislike for me. I use letters far too much. I'm assuming all currently preserved letters will stay that way?

Yay ModularOrigami! Terrific idea.

Third thing, in regards to seals, so that I understand this correctly. Let's say I purchase a seal for myself, and get it all set up (however that is). The seal bonds to me, and only I can use the stamp? Now, do I have to go back to the same bookbinder to get the stamp made each time, or can any bookbinder make me a stamp for my seal?

Lawliet2010-12-30 23:57:55
The designs are all public, so you should be able to get any bookbinder to make the seal if it ever decays.
