So I can make herds of tiny paper shadhahvar a la Turilira to hang in my manse. Pretty please?

Just off the top of my head and a few from here. (<--idea from link as well: different qualities/colours of paper and cases to store/display them in?) Apologies if some have been mentioned and or ninja'd while I've been typing this.

^Gigantic lists like above is why I think we should just change the noun to origami before it's too late. There's too many good patterns for origami, and nowhere to really go once one has been made. Ok, you have a snake. Now...you have a red snake! Aha! And a pink one! And...ok, this is boring. The designer in me is screaming for origami freedom! soapbox.gif

I'd like to see about a half-dozen more designs (though I can name a dozen other trade categories that have needed that attention far more, for far longer), but I think people are really selling short how much creativity is possible within the bounds of origami. Reading up on what's done in the real world with origami might help with that, but even more, creativity's going to flourish when we get past this initial flurry of "oh my god the lists are so empty and we must fill them!" and into the mature stage where we're designing things not merely to fill slots but because there's something we want to create -- when the idea or inspiration precedes the impetus.

Incidentally, begging for what the code can't do (not having a noun in the name, or having it only be "origami"), or asking for a list of 100 things, is not going to get us anything. Someone distill down the list to a poll so we can pick out about six favorites. I bet that if we ask for six, we might get them, but if we ask for twenty, we will get zero.

The difference is that for other trades, by and large, there's a lot of variety within 'table' or even (dare I say it) 'sconce.' There's not a lot of variety within 'origami flame.'

Especially since they have to be described with only folds and nothing can be printed on them.

I can only describe so many different coloured dragons. I do like origami. It allows me to run around and pretending to have flying dragons. All my ideas are like, ooo, sleeping kittens, or small loboshigaru monks, or furrikin kids, or small sprites...I wouldn't mind having to target origami with origami, eh? I know it might not be possible, alas sad.gif
Lendren2011-01-01 21:27:21
That's why I figure studying real world origami might be educational, since it typically follows limits that are just as strict or stricter, and yet people have done some amazing things. Just the "crane" pattern alone could probably fill a museum.
Unknown2011-01-02 06:14:19
The sutble distinctions between species of origami cranes are difficult to describe in text.

I think it's time to end the pattern collections. I'm going to open up a new thread soon with a few polls. The polls will be divided into the following categories, containing the following NOUNS (note: remember that we're selecting specific NOUNS that we'd like the Charites to consider giving us):

Animals

- cat
- wakabi
- phoenix
- squid
- stag
- frog
- bat
- bird
- fox
- thunderbird
- crow
- turtle
- fish

Insects
- Dragonfly
- Butterfly
- Spider (go away, Biology majors-- it's an insect)
- Scorpion (see above)
- insect
- beetle

Plantlife
- Tree
- Flower
- Blossom
- Seed
- Lily
- Rose
- Acorn

Inanimate Objects

- Snowflake
- Symbol
- Hand (you find a better category for 'hand' and I'll change it)
- Crown
- Instrument
- Violin
- Lyre
- Hourglass
- Feather
- Heart

Other

- Nexus
- Ravenwood
- Archdemon
- Angel
- Ravenwood
- Ouroboros
- Imp
- Masque

I'm posting this list now so that you can correct it for me before it becomes a poll. If I've forgotten anything, let me know. The time of this posting weighs upon me like temporal molasses.

EDIT: Added Caerulo's ideas

Yessss, blossoms. Sounds so much better to make 'a pink origami rose blossom' than 'a pink origami rose flower'. wub.gif more all-encompassing nouns.

Besides that, super awesome symbols, turtles and butterflies. cheer.gif

You listed Ravenwood twice.

You missed out my hearts and frogs. sad.gif

Just think of the potential of proposing with an origami heart! Or mailing an enemy a ragged origami heart with a severed bodypart contained within?

Fixed!

I realised there is a possible problem with some of the possible nouns. Targeting will be a problem. For example, when I want to TOUCH FLAME, I touched my origami flame instead. I'm not sure how nouns like the instruments, symbol, crown and such would affect the targeting or not.

For things that don't decay, like orgbixes, use an alias to target by number. Also, Flames of dae'Seren actually have their main noun as "blossom", since they're actually a flower.
