Height and Size

I'm noticing a rather bizarre trend in descriptions lately to arbitrarily make up character heights with no consideration for racial size, such as five-foot-tall faelings. Is there a canonical measure of height/size correlation? I've been working off of each point of size being approximately six inches, but has that changed?

Nope, in the latest "ask Estarra", she confirms that size is still ranked as 6 inches per point.

But trill are still an exception!! teach.gif

With the standard caveats about density and so on. Trills have super lightweight bones, and so are apparently much taller than their size stat would suggest, while dwarves are typically more stocky and dense. Five foot faelings, though... that's bogus. I saw a 21-inch loboshigaru once, too. giggle.gif

Keep in mind that Demigods are able to change size; I'm an 8-foot-tall Faeling due to Enlarging myself. A lot.
Ssaliss2011-02-05 02:16:37
And I'm a half-foot Faeling myself. And it's not just limited to demigods, although they're the only ones with permanent size changes; the rest have enlarge and shrink enchantments.

While certainly not a good justification for a five foot Faeling, there is a bit a lee-way beyond the 'trill have light bones' in terms of general height/size when you take into account body shape. Case in point Mael is probably a little taller then 7.5 ft (which is only one size off from average for Dracs anyway), but I've 'tried' to adjust by making him snakelike and rather width challenged (of course completely ignoring his ~5ft of tail whistling.gif).

Of course you could always try to extend this to the Faeling and Lobo examples by saying they are respectively very thin and very fat respectively, but in general... the body shapes resulting would be far too comical.

Edit: Of course this was all written before being ninja'd by the people talking about size modifications the demis et al can do tongue.gif Still, I stand by my logic in the general case...

I'm a 10ft tall aslaran biggrin.gif

The correct answer is that virtually no one gives a hoot about what their size stat is, they will put whatever they want in their description. Most of the time, people still use common sense. But you'll always find people who will put whatever they want because they can.

Take them aside and explain to them that they're not following established game lore and that a point more or less equals 6 inches and you'd be willing to help them fix their character. If that doesn't work then make fun of them horribly. I'm serious. Peer-pressure is a good way to keep bad RP out of the game.

In that case, elostian must be the tallest entity in the history of the basin.

And the shortest, both at the same time.

You have to exist in order to count for that.
Rivius2011-02-05 19:49:52
I always thought of size as being more like your weight than physical height.

I solve this problem by not mentioning a height. She's all shadowy, anyway, and mostly hidden by said shadows, so her actual height may very well be indistinguishable.

(But I picture her at about 6 feet in my mind.)

The way I view it, excluding Trill, is that the average size for a particular class is stat / 2. I'm size 21, so on the average, people of size 21 would be 10.5ft tall. As body mass also goes in there and that there are variations, you can have acceptable ranges.

Faeling should be around two-feet tall, but I think up to 3.5ft or even 4 would be acceptable (GIANT FAELING).
Ilyssa2011-02-05 22:39:14
In seriousness, I think that 'descriptive size' and the size stat don't always have to match up. Loboshigaru are size 13, but that doesn't HAVE to mean I'm moderately built and 6'6'', or sort of stocky and 6'. To me it's more of a guideline of 'You're about this big" and your descriptive size can be changed to suit your RP. According to size/2 = height, are faeling supposed to be ~2 feet tall? Yes. Do they RP that? Yes. Do they all have to be ~2 feet tall and RP that? Nope.

That sounds a bit snarky, looking over it, I apologise.

No, not everyone is required to RP anything, including size. It just isn't considered very classy to stray too far from the established guidelines.

But with dimish/enlarge/demigods... size probably isn't looked at too closely.
