As the battle rages on, Yuan Shao gains the upper hand over Cao Cao's forces, driving them back and utilizing siege weaponry to attack Cao Cao's encampment. While focused upon this, Yuan Shao's forces do not notice Cao Cao's men sneaking behind their lines until their main supply base at Wu Chao was up in flames. Yuan Shao's forces' morale crumbles and Cao Cao takes full advantage of this opportunity, striking out in a counter-attack where Yuan Shao's 2 top generals, Yan Liang and Wen Chou, fell. It is a crushing defeat that Yuan Shao never recovers from as he withdraws back across the Yellow River where he dies several years later, his sons too busy fighting each other over the heirship to defend themselves against Cao Cao's counter-invasion and soon, the entire northern Empire lies united under the banner of Cao Cao.
Establishing his capital at the city of Xu Chang and having rescued the Emperor Xian from the clutches of Dong Zhuo's forces in the west, Cao Cao now turns his gaze south in his quest to unite the empire...

As the Kingdom of Wei consolidates its power, Cao Cao turns his gaze southwards towards the Kingdom of Wu and the remnants of the followers of Liu Bei. Pressing his agenda of unifying the empire, Cao Cao moves his armies south, annexing the northern Jing Province and the fertile lands near Shou Chun, at the same time, driving the Shu out of Ru Nan and sending them fleeing to Xia Kou, losing one of their heroes along the way...
Out of options, the remnants of the Shu forces encamp there and send an emissary to discuss an alliance with Wu. After careful consideration and no small amount of posturing, the forces of Wu and Shu ally themselves in order to face the superior military might of the Wei Army. The resulting battle is arguably the most famous military engagement of the Three Kingdoms Period, the Battle of Red Cliff!
It is 208 AD and with 12 armies on the battlefield, it will take 7 to overwhelm an opposing general!

Yeah, Shu is kind of hitting a tough break here. Poor dudes. At least I'm not one of them!
