MMOs besides World of Warcraft?

Does anyone play any MMOs besides World of Warcraft? I can't find any good ones and as much as WoW seems fun to play, the subscription fee is not very appealing. tongue.gif

I used to play Puzzle Pirates. A lot of fun if you like puzzles. (And I do)

Edit: Also, if you can call Billy Versus Snakeman an MMO, I know a few of us play that. We even have our own village. Though, it is just a silly browser game. (Fun, though.)

Guild Wars. Never a subscription cost, PvP landscape is constantly changing, excellent story, replayability. If I hadn't switched to a Mac, I'd still be playing. And if I ever start again, my character will still be there.

I tried Guild Wars a couple of months ago but the after I got to the post-Searing portion of the first storyline it just became tedious to run around doing all of the quests....

Guild Wars: Nightfall is easier to get into for the "running around doing quests" reason you cited. Platonic ideal of MMOs.

EVE Online is where I am spending most of my online time. Since you're a bit meh about subscription fees, you can pay for the game through the ingame currency. You won't make that much within your first months but if you get well into it you can certainly keep it up like that.

If you're set on free, try LotrO. If you plan a path from the start on you can play it for free till about endgame. I found it well worth it for the storyline.

Seconded. Though if you don't like quests, this might not be for you, but you might find the storyline compelling enough to want to do them all.

Incidentally, I haven't played any other MMO's with graphics anywhere near as good as LOTRO's, but I found some of the views breathtaking, too.

A browser turn-based MMO (of sorts). Hilarious if you like spoofs on pop and geek culture. Had a character there for years and then stopped playing when I came to Lusternia. Was sad to one day return to see my character had been deleted due to inactivity.

Wanted a free, open-sourced, Mac friendly, graphical MMO... kinda as a follow-up to playing some Never Winter Nights persistent worlds (when I moved from Windows to Mac-based computing). This seemed to be the ticket. Unfortunately it was in pre-alpha. Haven't returned to check the updates.

OK, maybe not an MMO by definition (it's actually a tactical, hex grid, turn-based play), but there is some online competition. Since I am limited on time these days, I like Westnoth for 30-minute gameplay when I don't have 3-hours at my disposal.

I've been trying to get back into Battle for Wesnoth. It's fun, but I just haven't been up to doing much. Slowly working my way through the newbie campaign, only at the second stage.

You turn it on and watch as your character automatically does stuff and the numbers increase, that's literally it. It's ... surprisingly addicting.

I loved my Land Squid Tickle-Mimic, because, hey, he has EIGHT arms to tickle with! laugh.gif at me min-maxing my Progress Quest character. happy.gif

I got him to about level 50+ I think.

What Calixa failed to mention is that not only EVE the most awesome game you play without touching it(Woo skills..?), but the learning curve is in fact, a learning cliff of death and chaos.

Still a fun game though. Love cruising in on my super-tanky Myrmidon and blowing up Battleships that cost five time as much.

I used to play MapleStory, which was kind of cute. I heard they made leveling way easier in it recently, it used to take like, a solid week of grinding to reach 2nd job advancement.

The minipuzzles are really fun if you can deal with the fact the game is horrendously overpriced. One of their main coders initially was a mench from MIT. Good gal.

Rift is quite popular right now.

A turn based tactical game (I guess not quite an MMO) that is now 'free to play' by SONY is poxnora. Easy to learn but the difficulty curve can go vertical if you want to master the metagame. http://poxnora.station.sony.com/index.do

And yeah, the game has been out for some years now, I noticed I've been playing since '07. Time flies when you're having fun. Although I must say recently CCP has been doing a lot of effort to catch up with the times, as things were getting horribly dated. New character portraits wub.gif And soon we can be characters instead of just ships, woo \\o/ Also the graphical MMO in which I have had the best roleplay interaction, despite there being no such thing as RP server or RP rules.
