I'm surprised we have more French-speakers than Spanish-speakers. A pretty big portion of our playerbase is from the USA, isn't Spanish the big thing there? Then again, I guess there are a few Canadians too.

Bonjour, ca va?

I speak English primarily, French if you persuade me enough to, and at one point I could say that I knew tourist German.
Unknown2011-04-01 05:56:50
I always think, it would be most practical if I learned Spanish...but I think it's kind of an ugly language. Of course, I want to learn German or Russian, so maybe I have strange ideas about what makes up the aesthetics of language. laugh.gif Learning sign language would be really cool! I'm terrible at learning languages without instruction from another person though, so unless I happen to find someone who can personally teach me any of those things, I'm stuck with just English.
Lorina2011-04-01 06:00:33
I wish I was epic and knew other languages besides English. I took french and spanish in high school at the same time and now I keep mixing up all that stuff...
Stangmar2011-04-01 06:05:52
One thing I really misunderstood and i think many people still misunderstand is that taking a couple years of a language in any school will do nothing for you unless you plan to spend a ton of time in the country where that language is spoken....
Llesvelt2011-04-01 06:15:56
Or you have parents/family who speak the language.

Or, someone to talk to, in general.

Nemožes prićat naši ako snaš niko što prića naši (horribly spelled, probably).

Astig! May pinoy dito! Saan ka sa pilipinas? 2 years ako sa Pangasinan at La Union. Napakainit, pero magandang lugar.
I'm used to calling it Tagalog cuz that's what they called it in the parts i was at.

Central Luzon, in Rizal. May relatives kami sa Pangasinan kaso minsan lang kami makapunta. Since you've been taught Tagalog..I'm assuming you were assigned in parts of the provinces where they spoke Tagalog instead of Pangasinense, Pangalatok or Ilocano?
And..I think more Filipino players will pop in this thread anytime soon.
Stangmar2011-04-01 06:24:33
Ah. Saan banda sa Pangasinan? Fluent ako sa Tagalog lang. May konti akong alam sa Ilocano. Di ko alam magpangasinan. Nagfocus kami sa Tagalog. Na-assign ako sa limang bayan. Bauang, La Union; San Quintin, Pangasinan; Luna, La Union; Sta. Maria, Pangasinan; at Tubao, La Union.
Maganda ang Baguio, pero nakakatakot minsan ang biyahe. Namimiss ko na ang mga tricycle at jeepney, kahit bastos ang mga jeep driver.

for you english speakers:
"Ah, where in Pangasinan? I'm only fluent in Tagalog. I know a little Ilocano. I don't know any Pangasinan. We just focused on Tagalog. I was assigned in 5 towns, Bauang, San Quintin, Luna, Sta. Maria, and Tubao. Baguio is beautiful, but the travel is scary sometimes. I miss trikes and jeepneys, even though Jeep drivers are rude.

Here's a little Ilocano for you. I can't garuantee the spelling.

More common in China than in Canada? Who'd have thought.

English and Cantonese.

And we have, two slavs.

Not even enough to start a socialistic commune, I am disappoint.

Sylphas, I'm from Singapore. And no, Singapore is not part of China. laugh.gif

By the way, how common a dialect is in China depends on which province you're in. Hong Kong is predominantly Cantonese, Shanghai has Shanghaiese, Hainan has Hainanese, Guangdong is mostly Teochew while Fujian and Taiwan is mostly Hokkien.

Anyway, Singaporean Chinese are mostly Hokkien, followed by Teochew and Cantonese.

My father's family is in Calasiao, Pangasinan. Oh, I've only been to Baguio once. Maganda nga..saka pinakasikat dun yung mga ghost stories. Sayang nga lang di kami halos nakapasyal nun. Bastos? Bakit naman? Ay probinsya pa lang yan. Mas nakakainis mga drivers sa lungsod. Nakakabingi pa yung tugtog kahit madaling araw. (It's beautiful, and the ghost stories there are quite famous. It's too bad we weren't able to tour the place a lot then. Why so? That's just the province. Jeepney drivers in the city are more irritating. Their musics are are deafening even during the wee hours of the morning, too.)

Goodness. I have to admit I called my uncle to translate this for me. :/ I've only been to places in Ilocos and Pangasinan on a few vacations, and that was more than a couple of years ago..biggrin.gif

English is my first language, being from southern Ontario, I have taken 8 years of French, and can speak it well enough but I feel uncomfortable and nervous doing so around Francophones, so it comes out too fast. biggrin.gif

My family is also Danish and Portuguese, I can understand a little of both language (more the Portuguese than Danish), but nowehere near enough to state it on the poll. biggrin.gif (I do intend to learn more)
Okin2011-04-01 13:29:08
Tout le monde parle français! C'est étrange, non? Je me demande pourquoi.
Diamondais2011-04-01 13:33:13
France had a pretty good hold over large parts of the world as well, makes sense to know it when interacting with people in other countries, you're pretty likely to come up with someone who can speak French or English as a second language.
Shiri2011-04-01 13:36:56
I spent a lot of time in France because of my family, plus I learnt it in school. I just get Japanese whenever I try to think of French words now though.
Okin2011-04-01 13:39:45
I thought it was pretty much just France (plus the DOMTOMs), Quebec, Vietnam and Central/West Africa. The combined population of all those places has got to be less than a third of the total English-speaking population, and yet 11 out of 32 respondents speak French. I'm going to cautiously label that anomalous, especially since the number of West Africans playing Lusternia is probably a little low.

Kalaneya2011-04-01 13:48:29
I can speak Thai, in addition to English.
