Beasts and Critical Hits

Basic math says that beasts do not steal critical hits. It is not possible for this to actually happen in any meaningful way.

You see your beast attack and get a critical and then are disappointed when your next attack does nothing; that doesn't even mean anything. You're discounting the times when your beast gets nothing and you get a critical hit (by your own logic your beast is 'giving' you a critical in that sense). Even though it doesn't really work that way either.

Every attack has a % chance to critical hit. The next attack will have the same chance, regardless of whether or not the first attack got a critical hit.

If it did not work this way, Monks and dual-wielding warriors would be horrible bashers. The worst in the game.

They are, quite clearly, not the worst bashers in the game. tongue.gif

Now, seeds can affect this and cause streaks over a short period of time; but then again there are streaks in chance, too. The larger the sample size, the less this matters. Besides, streaks work both ways!

Also note that bashing attacks are far from the only things that use random numbers, so any streaks would be quickly lost regardless.

I'm confused as to why this is a topic...

Because there are people on the facebook group (more than one) who insist that beasts steal critical hits. It annoyed me enough that I have made it an actual topic for a wider audience.

It is also easier to write such a post here!

The chances for you to crit and your beast to crit consecutively are low. The chances for you to flip heads ten times in a row are low. However, if you have flipped heads nine times in a row, chances for the next flip to yield heads are completely uninfluenced by the previous nine flips - they're still 50/50. If you crit, the chance for your beast to crit is completely uninfluenced. If your beast crits, the chance for you to crit is completely uninfluenced.

Well, it somewhat depends how the calculations work. If the random number is unique to you and bashing, then theoretically it can steal critical hits. If the next numbers in line give you a world shattering, then a regular, if not for the beast, you would have gotten that world shattering hit. However:

(by your own logic your beast is 'giving' you a critical in that sense).

takes care of that possibility, because its just as likely to happen the other way around.

Also, if the random number is shared between other things, or the system clock is a factor in the 'random' numbers it comes up with, then the beast's critical hits are effectively irrelevant to what crits you get.

Every hit has a random chance. In theory you could land nothing but world-shattering criticals for the next week.

Though, the odds are almost as high as being attacked by a shark while living in Omaha, Nebraska.
Ytran2011-05-07 05:36:09
What Eventru is saying is that if you live in Omaha, avoid any zoos with aquariums.

But our aquarium is awesome! It even has a tunnel where you can walk through and watch all the sharks swim around you, really annoyed.

This is almost as much fun to read as listening to people claiming it's possible to cheat in Ruolette by following a system tongue.gif

You'll just have to keep an eye on those pesky sharks then!

Many years ago, before my time in Achaea, roulette was 100% predictable. biggrin.gif

Now, I just have a way I play that usually nets me more than I bet.

I don't know about YOUR crummy beasts, but Ma'arra steals my regular hits, freeing me up to critical more.

See, it's all about perception. If the above struck you as silly, it is. It is exactly as silly as "my beast stole my critical". On a mathmatical level.

Edit: Typo fixed! If you want possessive, it's just I-T-S, but if you want a contraction then it's I-T-apostrophe-S. Scalawag.

Even if there is a typo.

Maybe when a beast steals Crits, they turn to gold. THAT must be how it works!
Ilyssa2011-05-08 15:19:16
THEY CLIMBIN' IN YO WINDOWS
THEY SNATCHIN' YO CRITS UP
Lerad2011-05-08 15:54:13
My post in the original topic is so logical and insightful. It explains everything by facts, without that pesky perception thing. Why does it get no love? =(
