I am quickly getting tired of all this lag. Especially while fighting.
No, it's not me. It's the game.

Yep. It's been pretty horrendous lately.

No, it's not the game.
It's your ISP.
We know when the game lags, I've been listening to players whine for an hour about it, and we've not gotten even a single instance of server lag.
This means it's how you're routed to our servers - which is entirely out of our hands.
Short version: It's you (and half the game).
Unknown2011-09-02 03:18:45
Man, are you sure it's just some unfortunate circumstance that a lot of people are complaining about the same thing, who, I assume have different ISP's, etc etc.
And it's not you? :/
And it's not you? :/
Unknown2011-09-02 03:23:34
Hush, don't interrupt the 'It's not me, it's you' speech.

I must say I don't quite agree with you here. I'm far from the most avid basher/influencer/fighter, and even I have noticed the lag. It appears to hit pretty much on the dot every 20 minutes (give or take a few seconds, which means it rotates around a bit), and it hits everyone at the same time, judging by the outcries. This, to me, means that it's either your servers or your ISP, and not something that hits everyone in the world at the same time.

One thing to consider is, when you're not moving because of lag, are the mobs? If they are, then it's not on the server, because server lag slows the mobs down too. (In which case, it's a pain, it screws with your system, etc. but it is far less likely to get you killed/shattered.)
Ssaliss2011-09-02 13:05:17
I only notice it when harvesting, since I don't really bash or influence, which makes it a bit harder to tell.

When I lag while influencing or hunting lately, the mobs lag too.
Rakor2011-09-02 14:40:37
That means it's not you. Sounds like server lag. Calling it. Server lag.
Eventru2011-09-02 16:38:20
You can call it a paper towel, but it's still a nap...
Oh wait.
Anyways, we've lowered the server lag alarm threshold to 105% of normal (from 125%).
We've still not seen any lag since (and this was many hours ago).
So, again, it's not us! It's probably a mutually shared connection - your ISP does not own everything you're routed through to Lusternia, and many ISPs share the same routes. In example, every one of you is routed through Chi1, Chi2, or Chi3 (or sometimes more than one!). Remove Above.net? Maybe I'm showing my grey, but some of you are old enough to remember when half the game was routed through them - and the lag it caused those players was absolutely horrid (I remember, having been one of them). More likely than not, it's another one of those situations.
If you think you have lag running at any given moment, run a traceroute.
Hint hint, it won't be Lusternia that drops it.
Unless it's /our/ ISP, but given only some people are having lag problems, I'm a bit skeptical.

Oh, that. I think Sior said that this particular lag is caused by the system updating/saving itself, or some messy database thing. That's not what most people are talking about, I think.
Aison2011-09-02 17:48:23
I'm probably gonna say the Big E is right. I switched to two different ISPs and was getting lag on Lusternia like a mofo. I recently switched again and I get next to no lag, unless it's server lag.
I was using a really old mobile broadband, went to at&t and then went wireless with a new cricket mobile broadband which seems to be working just fine.

Ssaliss2011-09-02 18:03:56
Ah. Yeah, that five-or-so-second lag every 20 minutes is essentially the only lag I get (at least that I notice). If that's not what people are talking about, then I don't see any lag!
Unknown2011-09-02 20:33:52
As for lag... sometimes I lag, sometimes I don't. Generally, on a Friday night, or during an event, it's going to be laggy. There's both a lot of information for -your- computer to process and internet to pull down as well as a lot for the server. It's full-on expected that it will occur. Sometimes, I don't see the reasons why it would be lagging, but then for me using wifi, I don't know if it's that someone else is streaming youtube on the same network or not. I'll have to do further testing. I know that since switching from highspeed to fibreop I don't get nearly the amount of lag that I used to. So, we can point fingers in every direction we want but likely one will never be able to pinpoint the exact cause of every little lag spike. I understand it's frustrating, I really do. I used to get annoyed about it which is why I would sit and do nothing. But there's not a whole lot that anyone can do but try different things and see what works. As a side note, systems and clients lag too.
Ssaliss2011-09-02 20:45:00
There's likely a lot less traffic going to and from both your computer and the server than many think. If we assume 100 people are connected to Lusty at any one time, and each of them use up 1000 bytes per second (which is likely more than you use on average), that still only adds up to 100Kbyte/s (or 800Kbit/s) for the server. I've got a 10Mbit uplink at home, and that's as a private citizen; I'd assume that IRE has a far bigger uplink than that, which more than covers all of the MUDs. So lag due to network traffic isn't very likel; during big events, it's more likely that the lag is either server-side lag (having problems dealing with all of the commands at the same time) or clientl-side lag (having problems displaying all the spam with all kinds of color-codes).

I don't know. I'm in the cellphone industry, not internet.

Hey can someone guide me through this ping thing and how I can change it somehow if it needs changing? I'm really not sure how this all works all I know is I'm getting horrendous lag sometimes. Valonah and I play from the same place and she gets the lag the same time as me, as far as I know others aren't getting it so I think it's just us.
I just had a lag then disconnect (While not doing much) from the first raid I decided to go on since coming back, quickly logged back in, and then the enemies come in, say Daem, and they start attacking. Quickly after that mudlet crashed and I woke up dead. I really want to fix this. Really I have the same lag when not doing much, though mudlet doesn't crash for me normally.
Edit: I figured out how to ping I think and I'm getting 21.1 average ms. My question, What is ms and is that good or bad?

21ms is extremely good. Europeans/asians will be getting 15 times that and some other Americans 5 times that.
ms is milliseconds, or 1/1000 of a second, so it takes 21/1000 of a second for the signal from your computer to get there and back.
EDIT: depending on server location, I guess, I'm assuming west coast of NA

Whoa topic move as I was replying.
Hmm so I can safely assume it's not my internet connecting to lusternia? Are my other things to look at my system or mudlet which would be wierd since others don't have those issues, the next thing would be my settings or something? I wish I could figure this out easier. Unless it's a fluke maybe I'll just stick to arenas until I can make sure it's not just me. I'm open to ideas for someone to help as well!
edit: Also I just got this randomly now that I figured out how to trace things. This is significantly higher than all of my other ip's I go through being at 19 or 21.
hop - ms - ms - ms - IP address - host name
8 - 131 - 198 - 199 - 66.252.0.73 - te9-4.csr1.chi3.servernap.net
I ran a trace again and it was normal again.
