As soon as you let me rule the world, Xenthos.

I sure am not stopping you; thus, I am letting you.

Thank you! I will be so happy when I can. happy.gif

Quite the same, I'm not stopping you; thus, I am letting you.

It's your own choices stopping you.

And you're welcome! I'm so glad you're happy. smile.gif

No, you are quite specifically stopping me. I can type in the command and the system itself says no. This is something you have decided to leave as-is when you said it would be simple to change it. And without demanding that your players fsk themselves over just to fit into a system that has artificial limits for no good reason.

But you may still rule the world for all I care! Just let me pledge my house!

Hello!

Eventru says it is not to be. Woe, woe!

(In case you can't tell, I really don't like the artificial limit. tongue.gif)
Casilu2011-06-21 22:45:15
Come on, I can help you reach that artificial limit. Together.

I still don't see what the big deal would be with some honour gains from the library, like, I most assuredly do not write trash, and I most assuredly would not write trash, were I to gain honour from writing a book. It's annoying having prestige only. Can't there be a way of submitting a book to be verified for house honour? By and large I feel like what I hear from the admin (Eventru, as he is the most vocal) is very dug in and unwilling to even consider the thought of such a thing. The only thing I do these days is write books and be GM, I don't really bash or influence all that much. It would be nice to be rewarded with something like that, prestige is just such an iffy way to get honour because of the space of time between each prestige, and the amount of works submitted. This is so depressing to me.

Agreed.

Though they might be considering adding books. Eventru used that thoughtful smiley in another thread about family honour.

I heartily agree.

Eh, a lot of people do publish little things that don't quite qualify as trash, aren't terribly good either. Having any library published book gain prestige seems pretty open to gaming and abuse, I see why they don't really want to mess with it. The way books are screened for honor gains is through the existing process of prestige publications, which sort of makes sense. It might be viable to have something based off points, if critiquing was more open and there wasn't such a (real or perceived) risk in pointing out flaws in other publications, but that still sounds somewhat gameable.
Enyalida2011-06-21 23:19:58
Edit: Oops, that's never happened to me

If you can publish books that aren't trash but aren't terribly good for culture points, I don't see how it should be any different for family honour. A lot of books get published in the real world that aren't brilliant so why should Lusternia expect everyone who published something to be a best-selling author? To get family honour from publishing, you get two chances every 24 RL days, and that is only if your librarian submits your books for both categories (if you get any submitted at all). That is incredibly limiting to all of us who aren't amazing writers but are decent ones and would like to see the hard work and time we put in contribute to family honour.

Also, I think it's unfair that someone who puts a lot of time and effort into a book and goes through the excrutiating process of getting it published isn't rewarded because it's "not enough", while someone else sets their auto-basher for an hour, hitting one key every 30 seconds, and POOF! HONOUR!

Even someone who has put 20 minutes into writing a scroll has put in more effort than the basher.

In essence, there are four tiers for books:
1. Wrote and shelved, but did not publish.
2. Published, and passed the criticism period. (If it fails it goes back to 1.)
3. Submitted for the library contest.
4. Won the library contest. (If it lost, it goes back to 2.)

I can see the point of saying stage 1 should not be worth family honor because you could just publish "Moo" 50,000 times. That's also why stage 1 is not worth culture. And I can also see why stage 2 and stage 4 should be worth drastically different amounts of family honor. But what I think people are suggesting is that stage 2, 3, and 4 should each be worth increasing amounts of honor, but stage 1 should not. For example, and just on a relative scale, where 100 is whatever it's currently worth to win prestige:
1. 0 points
2. +10 points
3. +30 points
4. +60 points

That way, just publishing something that passes the criticism stage is worth 10% of the total value, which isn't much, because the criticism period only filters out the most egregious problems (like the aforementioned "Moo" book). So you already can't game the system. Getting your librarian to submit your work gets you some more, because librarians can only publish two books every two years, so very few books can get to this point -- and while a librarian might game the system by publishing books from the family he favors instead of books that are good, he probably won't stay librarian for long. (Assuming he had better books to publish, that is.) And actually winning prestige gets the largest amount by far.

There. Perfectly fair way to reward the effort, without making it gameable. That's what I think people are suggesting -- in any case, it's what I would suggest.

(While I agree trying to do things retroactively is a slippery slope that can't be entertained, I can't help but whimper to think where Starfall would be if we could do things retroactively, if something like this were in place.)

I agree with the guy above me.
Diamondais2011-06-22 00:26:45
Definitely so.

I concur.
