There are 327 cartels. That's 327 potential entries for Beauty. Let's be generous regarding inactives and say 200 of those cartels submitted something. That's 195 entries that can't win. I seriously doubt all 195 non-winners could be considered subpar designs. There's no reason to doubt your own abilities just because you didn't get picked for Beauty.
Personally, I usually dislike all five, because I much prefer simplicity, and wordy designs tend to win. :/

I like to think I've got a pretty good grasp of the English language and writing and such, but I didn't place, so who really knows what they look for. It was a design I took the last year and this year working on, and I assume the next one, once I figure out what it will be will take about as long to work on if not longer. Just keep writing and jotting down your ideas! You never know if you'll be lucky.
An original idea, elegantly rendered. If I ever dared to enter a design, that's what I'd aim for. To paint the best picture possible, with words, of an image interesting and unique enough to really deserve to be depicted.

I am a poor subsistance farmer. But, you're right, that hat does make you look poorer than me. Here, have this king's ransom of golden soverigns. I was saving it in case I needed to ransom a king.

One thing with Beauty I would like to see is how the other designs ranked (assuming it is some admin referendum type thing).

Personally, I usually find the Beauty designs to be a bit much. I prefer designs that are relatively simple in concept and execution, and then make that elegant. Usually the Beauty designs, or at least those that place, go the opposite direction and end up intricate. Course, Beauty's in the eye of the Beholder.

There are two kinds of long designs: designs that are long because they want to impress you, and designs that are long because their concept requires that many words to convey. Within each of these types, there is quality good and bad and in-between, but generally, the latter kind of long design tends to be better than the former.

What's that got to do with the price of fish?

The really long and detailed designs are not inherently undesirable, is what I was getting at. :P
Kiradawea2012-02-13 18:04:41
But I didn't say that. I said I prefer designs that are simple. Simple doesn't need to be short. Long doesn't need to be elaborate.
Unknown2012-02-13 20:00:17
I think shorter does tend to be better. If you need thirty lines, well, why? Maybe you have a wonderfully grandiloquent way of describing the way the golden tassels of your tapestry hang, and the way their subtle swishing is like the web-spinning of a symphony of silent spiders, but some things don't need to be said. Composition is important. You need to be ruthless when you edit. There's a certain innate tl;dr reaction when you're presented with something that long, which doesn't have paragraph breaks.
Unknown2012-02-13 20:48:49
I am guilty of half-page descriptions when simplicity sounds much better.
It is a constant battle in the world of designing.

The firmament shimmers into the image of a grand Design of incomprehensible
complexity that stretches out into infinity. As the sheer weight of the vision
presses down on your mind, the visage of the demigod Ushaara briefly appears
in the sky before the image fades.
Oberst Ushaara, Minister of Peace (Male Demigod).
He is an Avatar of Zvoltz, the Architect.
Yaaaaaaaaay Ushaara! :D

So this is why there are so few mugwumps and tae'dae around? None of them can find love.

Well, it would make an interesting lead-in to the racial adjustments in the special report!

I'm missing a pair of artifacts, and I don't have logs of what the item numbers were, so I can't get them back. This is more then a little frustrating to me.
Unknown2012-02-15 05:34:18
Have you tried artifact list? My hamster kept literally poofing into some abyss for a few days until it got fixed.

They're entirely gone.

You should probably issue yourself or email artifacts@lusternia.com or something.

Random...random coversations with magnagoran novices are random, but nice I guess? Also, giving a cup cake to Ssaliss. Alliterative names are awesome.

This is the first time in a very looooong time I've signed on and there were less than 5 people online in Glomdoring.
