Set-up's more complex, execution is more devastating.

Agreed. Having been a warrior, warrior combat is a greater challenge in most cases. Monks have some major advantages (such as not needing wounds to afflict), but do definitely take more to get going in the first place.
Once you have everything running, it'll work well.

Certain monk classes need wounds to afflict, and a monk that build wounds will always do better than one that doesn't.

Which monk classes? I know that wounds increase the efficacy of some of the basic kata skills, but the specs all seem to be 'use ka, get affliction' things.

Ninjakari stuns and cracked elbow/kneecaps are wound dependant, Shofangi also have a wound-dependant stun, but more importantly, their insta is (almost) entirely wound based. Tahtetso and Nekotai are the only two with no spec-only afflictions tied to wounds. Of course, when compared to warriors, the couple of afflictions that are wound dependant in Ninja/Shofa specs appears to be almost negligible.
Sahmiam is correct, however, in saying that wounds remain a very important part of monk combat. Wounds boost damage significantly, and makes the difference between monks who cannot kill even with their supposedly obscene affliction rate and the monks who can do it with ease. Not to mention, of course, wounds play an especially significant role in group combat.

Yeah, the damage I definitely know about. I forgot about Crunch. The wound-dependant stun, I'll have to check the skills to see what that one is.
