The appearances of the sharded Elders are left deliberately ambiguous, I believe, so people can make up their own minds on what's "canon" to them. Given how most of the Elders still present in the Basin are humanoid, though, my own personal belief is that the sharded Elders were largely the same; and those now embodied in bestial races merely took on the forms of the animals they loved as Gods. (Bollikin's the best example, since his chosen forms are so disparate.)

Theoretically, couldn't you just continuously win against a runed figurine to extend decay times indefinately with any other figurine?
