The essence is only calculated when it is offered, so as far as esteem goes, 1 unit in a level 40 figurine is exactly the same as 1 unit in a level 1 figurine.

No. The level of a figurine only has an impact at the point of offering.
Rika, keep this up and I'll have no choice but to make you my avatar.

For the issue of a newbie/lowbie influencer not being able to afford a figurine, isn't it possible to sell esteem directly by borrowing the buyer's figurine, imbuing that figurine with your stored esteem, giving it back and then receiving gold based on the amount imbued? Similar to how enchanters make gold.
One of my characters has completed a round of influencing and it's clear that the previous 100% esteem is not equal to the current 500 units... seems like it's just around half. So, based on the latest acceptable market price for esteem before the change which is around 7,000 gold, and the assumptions that (1) you can sell esteem directly by borrowing figurines and imbuing them (2) the current 500 esteem max per person is half the previous 100%, an influencer can make 3,000-4,000 gold a "run."
Of course, buying esteem would probably be more annoying since a person doesn't carry that much esteem within himself/herself anyway.
tl;dr: If thievery won't be an issue, why don't influencers just imbue esteem directly onto someone else's figurines and get paid for it?

100% "old" esteem is 655 units. So it's not quite 500, no. And regarding coming to the buyer to fill their figurine with esteem, sure, that's certainly possible. However, it'd require interruptions in your influencing run, so it's far from optimal.
EDIT: What I could see, however, is for people to lend their figurines to the influencer and pay them upon their return. It'd require far more trust though, but it's probably a non-issue if it's in the same org.

Getting enough gold for a figurine can't be too hard. There are many ways to make gold for a new person or they could most likely ask for help from a guild member. From what I've seen lusternians are very helpful to their guild mates.
