How did fixing the rift reduce lag by 80%? And how are liquidrifts used?
Ssaliss2011-11-13 12:04:20
I'm assuming they meant the lag caused by the rift (which I assume was negligible to begin with) by 80%, not the overall lag. As in, the rift is now 80% more efficient than it was.

so do we move our vials to the liquid rift? Or kegs? Or do we sip out of our own rift?
Ssaliss2011-11-13 12:26:29
You fill the liquid rift from vials or kegs up to a (normal) maximum of 2000 sips, and then link vials to that content to sip directly from the liquid rift through the vial. Or, you can just not and use vials like before, if that's your fancy (although you'd need to carry more vials that way, and whenever a vial decays, you'd lose any contents). There's basically every reason to move them, and no real reasons not to.

Ok, so 5 liquids can go to an artifact vial. Does the use differ? Do i still drink bromide, drink health, drink mana, and get all that from one vial?
Ssaliss2011-11-13 13:02:51
Yep, you sip like normal. Never tried to SIP though, so I don't know what that'd do.
Rakor2011-11-13 13:15:23
Imagine how delicious that would be, health/mana/bromide all at once
Xenthos2011-11-13 13:46:27
&*#$(*& my health vial is dead. :(
Rakor2011-11-13 13:48:45
It's ok, you have a liquid rift now!
Xenthos2011-11-13 13:54:40
Rakor:

That's the problem, I went from an infinite health vial to 60 sips of health in the rift. :D
Iosai has saved my life though, I now have health sips again. Thanks Iosai.
Trust players to do bone-headed things like hold down the enter key while putting all of their vials into the rift at once.
(Note to other special vial-holders; don't do that just yet, though there will be a check put in specifically to prevent us from being silly. <3 Iosai)

I wonder... Would it be possible to expand the GMCP-messages for the rift to also cover the liquid rift and tarot/runes?
Kiradawea2011-11-13 14:12:01
For artifact vials, do you need one or five of these new sigils to make them link to five liquids?
Also, there's more than 50 types of liquid around, not counting various types of spirits and teas, right? So even with the artifact you're gonna have to consider just keeping some things in vials?

With artifact vials, you don't need the sigil at all; just link away.
as for the amount of liquids, I've got 32 different kegs (I think) in my shops, which means 32 different liquids. That does not include poisons or magicink though, but does include five different kinds of perfumes and teas, as well as invisibility, salt, sulfur etc. I think there are only 15 curative liquids, so most people should be fine with the 25 liquid limit, or 50 if you need poisons (not sure how many different poisons there are).

Right. Just saying that if people want to, they should be able to store everything in the rift. As it is, you won't be able to have all poisons, all curatives, all oils, all teas, all everything.
Xenthos2011-11-13 14:20:32
25 or so different poisons.
Very few people really carry them all around, but it would be nice to be able to put everything in the rift.

Considering there are potentially unlimited amounts of different tea/alcohol designs, I'm not sure it's feasible to be able to put everything in the rift. But yeah, expanding the rift to 75 kinds with the second rune and 100 with the third might be nice.
Xenthos2011-11-13 14:28:17
Can you put customized liquids into it? That's pretty neat, actually.
Ssaliss2011-11-13 14:34:43
I've got a bit of whiskey in my rift, at least.
Iosai2011-11-13 15:24:56
You can (or will, with the next reload) be able to rift crafted liquids. However, they will lose their crafted quality as soon as you do so. It's not feasible to store the craft details in the rift, so if you put "a dreamy sea breeze beer" in the rift, it will come out as plain old boring beer.
I'm going to look into extending the gmcp rift messages after this all settles down. It may or may not be feasible depending upon some of IRE's core gmcp functionality.

I wish that the liquidrift didn't require an artifact to put all types in it.
It definitely comes across as a money scheme more so than a way to fix lag, because I don't see how "less vials in the game" is a "luxury" of any sort when -every- single player benefits from people having to not buy an artifact. Artifacts should just give more sips and people should already be able to hold 50 different liquids. I don't think anything is being devalued, but it leaves a sour taste in my mouth when the goal of this change was for the health of the game via item reduction and the item reduction is impeded with a requirement for an artifact to make a few bucks.
I would have not only been pleased, but also impressed if these changes to pocketbelts and vials included all 50 LR slots and maybe a 25% increase to existing rift slots. That would have sent the message that those in charge care about the players and not about making money. (And yes, lag reduction can most definitely be considered a business choice.)
To the people complaining about the loss of pocketbelts, put your items in a locked manse room, and try to use them up ASAP.
