-frowny face-
I don't use Mudlet mapper and sometimes I see the hasty messages - othertimes not. So I'm confused as to why with the weather changes I don't see hasty messages at all but in normal conditions I do (for example, going through Celest, super fast, occasional hasty message. Doing the same thing in Icewynd, I don't see ANY hasty messages). It's just like it cancels out the commands.
But I'm going to hunt down this Mudlet mapper and shoot it. Or just beat it with a sack of squid, too.
Also, will those sandals actually reduce the amount of time it takes me to walk with the new weather changes?

I have them, as well as a movement increasing skill, and I still get slowed down -a lot-. I need to find hurricane force winds again at some point to thoroughly test without them, but it looks like weather sets you at a locked walking rate instead of reducing it by a set amount.

As a note, it is inordinately difficult to get to reasonable levels of clothing. Right now I'm in robes, a scarf, a cloak, gloves, boots, unmentionables and a hat, and I'm showing up as slightly underdressed. That needs to be fixed if you're going to make weather have an impact.
Ileein2012-01-04 18:00:23
Amen. Give tailors a way to mess with warmth values maybe.

The only way I personally found to be dressed normally was to wear two cloaks (on top of robes, gloves, shoes, socks, other underwear, coat, belt - also a scarecrow hat but I don't think that counts).
This is...rather silly.
On the upside, Deiparous Speed in Veneration is now awesome.

We could make it SURVEY instead of FORECAST, but again, I think Iosai has the right of it. I think people would complain if:
The Pool of Stars
It's a bit windy here, isn't it? Meleris, Keeper of the Pool is here. Lorina is here, picking her nose. Aison is here, picking her nose too. Sheia isn't here because she hasn't logged in today, PITA.
Became:
The Pool of Stars
It's a bit windy here, isn't it? Sweet crap is it hot, it's like 100 degrees! Holy jeez, it's cloudy! Raging storms HOOOO! Damn, all of this makes it look like it's HUUUURICANING out in here. Meleris, Keeper of the Pool is here. Lorina is here, picking her nose. Aison is here, picking her nose too. Sheia isn't here because she hasn't logged in today, PITA.
That's a real example, pulled right from the game, but I think you get my point. FORECAST is a quick and easy way to tell what the weather is like, and I think people will get used to spamming it (even if they gag it and display it in a little side window or what have you - it's probably what I'd do)
Eventru, I think you missed the point! Not to see ALL the weather at once, but to see the real big one that is obviously going to be having an effect on you. Like, who cares if there's one or two clouds in a room when the important part is the hurricane you're oblivious to until you stop and take a moment to check the weather. I was very confused earlier when the room I was in was saying it had lovely weather, until I stopped and checked the forecast and saw HEY HURRICANE!
The most severe weather should be the one you see in the room, because it's the one anyone with a functioning brain would notice first.

It reduces you by a set amount.
But if you have +3 celerity and -2 from wind -3 from cold (random numbers) you've a net gain of -1 - so you probably can still only move 1 room at a time.

I wore a blanket. Easy to get to normally dressed warmth with a blanket!
Unknown2012-01-04 21:26:47
It seems to me that effects that normally speed up movement are not scaling well in the face of this new weather. I mean, those sandals are a hefty investment on their own, and a bit of wind or cold shouldn't just completely negate something like that, in my personal opinion. Could that be checked/fixed, perhaps?

I'm not going to wear a blanket around just so I can walk at something higher then a snail's pace.

Points:
Many plate designs have no padding because they had to be made entirely of metals for the very practical reasons of forging prior to tempering as it is now. If clothing is going to suddenly matter, plate should provide something or other, or at least have an option to compensate for the penalty.
That said, I don't feel like clothing matters much.
The whole system is still face-punchingly awful for anything outside the mildest of weather. I feel strongly the system shoud be changed, rather than drop this up in our laps, then offer an artifact to make it suck a little less.
There has to be better ways to implement weather conditions rather than just lambasting us with hasty messages. As much as I like the idea of weather, this has quickly become one of my least favorite changes ever.
Ideas (some brought up before) instead of hasty messags:
Also, cities should have some way to mitigate the weather within their territory.

- Random snow drifts- treat similar to briar walls
- Random lightning strikes for electric damage
- Mirages/hallucinations due to extreme heat- treat like insanity
- More visibilty related effects
- Random room flooding in very heavy rain- treat like aqua demesne flooding.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant.
I don't do my own scripting well. I don't like using mappers or auto-walking - I like doing that on my own. If I have to start capturing forecasts every time I enter a new area and the best way to save my fingers and wrists from more strain is to just give up and get triggers for everything, okay. I'm sure not going to like it, though.

Thank you for agreeing to review armour and its effectiveness as weather-protection! :)
I'm sure all us warrior-folk appreciate it-- everyone else if robes are part of the review as well.

I will probably be reviewing most of these ideas over the next few days, including but not limited armour's warmth factor, size and racial heat/cold resistance affecting celerity, celerity's granularity in general, the effects of artifacts (eg golden sandals), and skills that will ameliorate the effects of weather. Watch this space! The weather is still in flux. :)

This reminded me of another question, actually! Right now the weather differences between adjacent areas seems to be pretty erratic. Should we expect the weather changes to not be so dramatic from area to area all the time once the system has had time to settle in?

This does work with cold weather already, when you step into a cold area you get a little message about the cold seeping into your bones. This may be because it also does passive freezing...

No, unfortunately not. This was a problem with the old system as well, and it is not one that is easily rectified without a system that does complex calculations for every room on an individual level. We did not opt for a system as indepth as that, because it is unnecessary and frankly unwieldy. Sorry!

Pilgrims should be considerate and up their rates or something. You know, hazard pay.
It's dangerous, trying to run around in the mountains in hurricane force winds.

So long as we know.

Though on the note of the weather itself, is there a particular reason why Hallifax is (so far) unbearably hot in a fair portion of the outdoor rooms (particularly at the Matrix itself)? Particularly given the ambients still describe howling winds and bits of ice and it makes sense that a city above the cloud level might be naturally cold?
Not that I'll complain if say its hot because all the crystal is magnifying the sunlight and making us live in a giant death ray, but would like to know what's going on and why? Danke.
