They made a good move lowering gold (in theory... since the rarer mobs still drop big).
The gold in the system is still there though, need to pull gold out of the economy before market will go down and maybe cap denizens a bit on gold drops based on their health/level. Manifestations I can understand but when a quest area mob drops 1200 when he dies in the same time as a gorgog yeah.....
Also introduce credit market to bound, remove speculators and prices will drop and stay dropped (instead of everyone buying low cause they have gold and trying to sell higher).

I hate that so much. :(
It's one of the chief reasons why I'm afraid to put up credits on the market. However, I highly doubt the higher ups would allow Lusty to change their credit sale model, because they probably want to keep it similar to the rest of the IRE games out there.

When I buy credits, I actually stopped selling on the market because of that--now I make offers, weed out who I feel are the "super-rich", and limit the amount to make sure people get a fair shake. I don't want to put up credits at 8,000gp each and then have somebody buy them all en-masse and then sell them at a markup.
Malarious2012-01-20 13:27:49
I kind of agree with Phred, I rather target offer. I do not try to go by "super-rich" though I try to go for who has a use for them. People assume I am rich becausei have like 700 bounds on me. That is all left over from gnomes though, I only have 136K gold on me, I like to buy things, my highest cost arty is my beast and I am looking at getting a dweller for RP (an assistant!). I do not like speculators, and I prefer to target offer to people I think will use it, I make a point to state I am not buying to speculate. I want dingbats for SHINIES not so I can resell.
Enyalida2012-01-20 18:42:22
I agree, more things of (any) worth to buy with your gold!

So just how terrible is the concept of a doodad (artifact? org thing? manse addition?) that can change huge amounts of gold directly into essence or somesuch? If demis with fat wallets are a problem, it could work, as I'm hard-pressed to think of folks who wouldn't jump at the chance to get a tiny extra edge.
Potential problems: overwhelming imbalances due to mass gold-conversion, flipping things around so that folks are horribly miserly instead, people not using it anyway because they're rich as Midas at sub-Titan levels.

Into essence? That sounds like a bad idea for the reasons you stated, and I still wouldn't use it.... I've got the powers I want at this point, and have no reason to buy more essence. I don't raid, and neither do any members of my faction (With a few exceptions), so we aren't likely to hit the 2 mil essence drain any time soon.
EDIT: Though silly, curios were a great example of a nice gold drain (though the wheel kinda screwed that one up), they were cute, required a bunch of gold to get, and had lasting benefit (of cuteness). What'd I'd even do is not allow something like that to be bought with credits. To buy them with credits, you buy the credits, then sell them on the market for gold. This means that you absorb a bunch of gold with your credits and then throw it away on the curio-thing, instead of bypassing the gold system.
EDIT1: And while cool, they had no bearing on combat, it wasn't some new thing that you NEED to keep up with combat, it was a nice semi-artifact that could be gold bought. As is, you can buy credits with gold, but that gold isn't subsequently going anywhere, so more and more gold is accumulating. The one gold drain that sees any use (afaict) is aethermanses, which I have a hard time trying to care less about. Cool idea, no interest in participating in it.

If anything, a thing that converts gold to demigod weight would help more.

The problem I see with gold sinks is that to have a long term effect, they have to have value that's greater than the equivalent amount of credits. Curios for example. They were neat, yes. No mechanical benefit. Were they worth the hundreds of credits I could have bought with the gold instead? Heck no.

Technically, this already exists: It's called CREDITS BUY 300 AT 15000;BUY MANNA (modify the credits to buy accordingly, since I'm not able to view helps right now):P
Rika2012-01-20 20:26:20
It is 1100 credits.
Somehow I don't think buying 1100 credits off the market at a time will help what is being discussed here.

One man's curio is another man's talking peppermint dragon kitten-shop. Which is to say, to each his own. Would you spend tons of gold on curios? Maybe not. I would, and so would others. I do wish they would bring them back, replete with global-trading-market where you could put up unwanted pieces with a buy price or a trade requirement. They were a good gold sink. The problem was the coins and the crazy wheel prizes.
Razenth2012-01-20 20:37:32
Hey! At least it brings in the dough!
I SAW YOU STROKING IT AFFECTIONATELY.
I will conceded that is is plausible that a top-tier player with lots of artifacts and omnitrans would possibly value a mechanical-effect-less goldsink more than credits.

Not read the rest of this thread but wanted to comment on what Raggy said. Gold is definitely easier to get now for the people who know where to bash. Given the correct run and a day of not bashing I've managed to hit 136k in an hour and 10 minutes work with new gold drops. They're that good if you know where to bash. I do have a Pyramid though which speeds things up considerably and I have some nice areas I hunt that are very under hunted.

Also, keep in mind that buying credits on the market does nothing to help overflows of gold, the gold just changes hands!

Now maybe if there was a market tax in addition to the selling price...
Though I doubt many want that, it might actually stop resellers.

Thank you! I was starting to feel really weird, being the only apparent person who was getting more gold for less time invested these days. I knew I couldn't be the only one.
Also, we all secretly love Milla - there's no need to skew words.
