yes, ALTS could likely do it. But they're encouraged to ask for help. Why? So we can, you know, RP at them and help them out. Same as novices are recommended to do their lessons from a person and not a tutor. I don't think Collegiums persay aid us in ignoring novices when those novices aren't interested in having anyone help them.

I'd have asked for college help if I'd not thought it'd be a bother, honestly. But that's likely more an issue of my own worry that I'm going to be bothering someone and past experiences of " will be glad to teach you" when I've asked regarding learning, rather than anything concrete.

Calixa:
Collegiums are pretty general though. It would be nice if guild paths could be made official and sort of coded in just like the collegium quests are. We are having a pretty solid system in the Nihilists now, and we got an advancement ritual, which is really neat. I realize it is not possible for everything, but maybe the guild teacher could take up the boring bits of a guild interivew, just pretty standard questions with a clear answer that the guild requires you to know, like say name all the guilds in your city / commune.
Honestly, I prefer the way it is now. College teaches basic skills and then the guild takes over to do the more culture aligned stuff where it requires interaction with people. We don't want to remove them too far from guild interactions, because once you do that there's no sense of community, which is what a guild relies on in order to get anywhere.
The reason the Nihilists are doing so well is because we have three very active leaders who are willing to beggar the guild if they have to, as long as we develop things that make everyone, from novices upward, feel like they have a strong connection to what's going on. And honestly, anyone within the guild who says they don't understand where the Nihilists fit into things are just not paying attention anyway, and I feel like divorcing novices further from the other people in the guild will make that situation worse.
Someone else mentioned that I make regular guild members help novices- I feel like anyone in the guild should be able to. You shouldn't need an undersecretary title to give a novice an introduction to the themes, concepts and coded aspects of the game, and it should -really- be a responsibility of anyone who is online at the time to make sure novices know what's going on. All it takes is a simple message to people who're in charge if they notice someone who's gone without help for a long time, even if it's to try and get someone to be online at the right time.
