Rowena's Love Song, before Gloriana's Fall by Yini

Runner Up for January 2007

Long I've loved the approaching of the Night,
as sun's last light paints the evening clouds
a shade of honeyed hue before my eyes
that oft of late downcast have been held.

I feel her sweep me up in her path
and wrap me round with shaded grass and breeze
and through the elms I leap, not looking back,
as stars swing past beyond the leafy crowns

of ancient trees where watch with silent eyes
the creatures of the darkness where I hide,
and skipping over sparkling streams and ponds,
I laugh and sing with two arms opened wide

of joy and sing of sweet love found at last
where least expected warmest arms have wrapped,
and held me close beneath the silent dark
of silver stars that sing, bright and glad.
