Dance of the Constellations: A Lucidian Ballad by Moriana

Runner Up for February 2007

“Will you dance with me tonight?”
Said the Sun to the Moon
As the world sank into a misty twilight
Over which a thousand stars were strewn.

To his request the Moon did agree,
So off they went to forget all hardship
In the pleasant gardens of the Bumblebee
With honey, wine, and companionship.

The benevolent Papaxi met them on his way
And saluted both the Sun and Moon.
Then an ethereal waltz began to play
As the stars struck up a lilting tune.

Over the expanse of the evening sky,
Together the Sun and Moon did dance
While sweet fumes from the Burning Censer wafted by,
Beguiling them into a rapturous trance.

As their dance spun ever dizzyingly on
The waltz brought them near the Dolphin's mystic seas.
They narrowly avoided the Lion's toothy yawn
While distant Aapek spied them at his ease.

Even warlike Tarox and clever Sidiak
Seeking the wisdom of the Dragon in his cave
Turned to see the Sun guiding back
The Moon from the Skull's deathly grave.

Bright Eroee smiled as she watched the pair,
For her power was tied to the heart,
As the Sun clasped his partner fair
And wished they never had to part.

For now true night was drawing near
Beckoning the Sun home to the west.
In his fiery eye shone a single tear
As the final measures of the waltz came to a rest.

"I must be gone," said the Moon with a sigh,
"My place tonight is on the Glacier's icy plain."
She departed with a gentle kiss goodbye,
Leaving the Sun to taste love's bittersweet pain.

Now the Sun can but bide his time,
Awaiting the twilit hour of romance
When he can once more ask the sublime
Moon for yet another starlit dance.
