A Mugwump's Song by Jillory

Merit for September 2007

Moon River, flow through me!
Cool the bone-deep fire
burning hidden in my soul.
I am your tired child,
filled with flame yet riverbound,
ever turning, ever changing,
caught between two warring worlds.

The salamander's heart:
O sweetest, blackest paradox!
An ever-glowing ember
ever dreaming of the sea.

But, ah, Moon River!
the riven moon shines
bright upon your silver face,
mocking me with starry smiles.
Draw me on, and further on,
past the tree-strewn banks,
riding on a hartstone leaf,
a moonhart seed upon my tongue,
a cinder on the forest wind.

Moon River, river of mine,
mother of my double heart,
you do not quench, but rather feed
the fire that abides in me.
