Faces of the Legion by Jael

Merit for April 2008

What follows is a sermon written and delivered by Jael d'Murani, expanding and
discussing the teachings of Lord Morgfyre, the Legion.

*****

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse intones, "The faces and teachings
of the Legion are multifarious and widely varied. He Himself embodies the very
precepts by which we shape our lives and actions, as well as those around us.
However, I have found that it is not enough to merely comprehend and recite
these precepts by rote."

Spreading his arms wide, Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says,
"How many of you follow Him? How closely do you tread on the path He has laid,
the way to true power? He makes Himself manifest when He sees fit, but we must
continue His work still, when He is not about to shepherd His flock."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Only by bringing His
teachings into ourselves may we make them apparent in the world around us. Only
by Hungering for more, by seeking Inspiration through Lord Legion Himself, may
we sow the seeds of dischord and Chaos that ultimately predestine the fates of
those lesser souls who we would use as pawns in our intrigues."

Smiling grimly, Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "A paradigm
shift has changed my life, fellow Magnagorans, and through taking Lord
Morgfyre's teachings into yourselves, so too will you be transformed."

Jael clicks his fingers sharply. A bilious black smog seeps from the air and
coalesces into a glittering obsidian Ouroboros that hovers ominously above the
assemblage.

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Allow me to elaborate.
Perhaps one of the most widely known aspects of Lord Morgfyre's tutelage is
that of Hunger. The Legion's own Hunger has lent Him the capability to devour
countless souls, as well as the Elder God Hajamin, and more recently, through a
masterful scheme, the heart of Aestra."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "As Hunger is found within
the Lord, so is it found within each living thing - from the meanest rodent to
the mightiest Warlord. Hunger has many facets: a thirst for power, an undying
ambition, a constant yearning for forbidden knowledge. Through Hunger, one may
never be truly content."

A haze distorts the air within the mighty circle of the Ouroboros, depicting a
lowly serf. A ribbon of dark smoke snakes from the aether and engulfs the serf
in a sudden whirlwind, leaving behind the commander of a mighty army,
resplendant in jagged, blackened armor and horned helm.

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Hunger teaches us that
nothing is ever out of reach, that we may always strive for more and obtain it.
It is both primal and refined, a base emotion and a philosophy that has been
made evident in every achievement anyone has ever sought. Nothing may satisfy
the Hungry for more than a fleeting moment, and so those who serve as adherents
of Hunger continually rise in prestige and power."

With a thin smirk, Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Through
the grace of Lord Morgfyre, Hunger creates insurmountable warriors and
tenacious politicians, and molds its possessors into something greater. Live by
it, and be empowered by it."

Jael makes a subtle gesture, and the Ouroboros suddenly moves with life, its
maw gnashing upon its own writhing body as it devours its own tail, smoke
wreathing its form as new substance replenishes the consumed flesh.

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "As citizens of Magnagora,
we are no strangers to the art of Transformation. Our Dominion is named for it,
and Lord Morgfyre's very symbol is testament to it. This is perhaps one of the
Legion's most potent tenets, and is an unwavering truth as much as a conscious
precept."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Nothing remains the same.
Individuals, empires, societal courtesies or damnable offenses, all are fated
to change at a moment's notice. Death is mutable. Destruction gives way to
renewal. Transformation is a natural force with no seeming bias, as evidenced
by the blasted city of Light that rose from the ashes of their accursed
Princess' sacrifice."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "However, Transformation has
taken a selective form in the Taint. The lesser Emanations of Shallamar have
become the Demon Lords of Nil, and the grand Engine of Transformation has
emerged from the lesser Magnagora that preceded it. Though it permeates the
entire Basin, Transformation is on our side, and we may utilize it in some
small manner, in actions, lies, deceit, and manipulation, to change the
existence around us and shape it according to our will, and to Lord
Morgfyre's."

Jael waves his hand negligently, and the Ouroboros becomes inert once more,
wisps of darkness eroding about it.

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Hunger and Transformation
are the two base tenets that pervade Lord Morgfyre and, in turn, the Basin.
However, within the Lord, there are tenets that remain to be found, or
elaborated upon. As the Legion possesses many aspects, so too do His lessons."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "For example, Evolution!
Evolution is closely tied to Transformation, but holds a finite difference.
Where Transformation is the act of change that affects everything and everyone,
Evolution may be interpreted as change within oneself - perhaps not as obvious
as becoming Tainted, necessarily, this precept may be evinced in the alteration
of thought processes, learning from one's experiences, or bearing witness to a
paradigm shift of such magnitude that it reforms you completely, evolving you
into something more than what once you were."

Jael folds his hands into the sleeves of his robes, a small, secret smile
fleeting across his features.

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "No mortal can claim that
they have not evolved in some way since their emergence from the Portal of
Fate. Just as Transformation changes all, Evolution changes one, and functions
as a specialized Transformation that reforms one's beliefs, thoughts, mind, and
emotions. Evolution may well be interpreted as survival of the fittest, and so
those who remain stagnant in their ways seldom persist into the vaunted halls
of greatness."

Jael raises an index finger thoughtfully, causing a cacophonic dissonance to
burst from the silence following his words. The maddening aria of violins grows
in strength and gains in tempo until it threatens to overwhelm, and is suddenly
replaced with a void of sound.

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "The greatest of plots and
the most intricate of schemes stem from the same source as symphonies of the
sheerest passion: Inspiration."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Lord Morgfyre's chaotic,
ever-changing nature is reflected in the thoughts of each sentient being. From
within this shifting morass of knowledge, a Divine spark will allow pieces of
brilliance to be made evident, granting Inspiration of the purest sort. From
this exquisite, half-formed gift, a web of interconnected thoughts may be woven
to create a masterpiece of deceit, a sublime strategem of war, or a masterful
Bardic venture."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Aesthetics that manipulate
their audience and carefully-laid subterfuge play as much a role in furthering
the Legion's will as do His Blades and warriors. With His very aegis, He has
granted unto us the ability to create, and to expand upon that creation until
Inspiration gives way to a finished product that has the power to sway and
topple any obstacle or object of your attention. This Inspiration is subtle,
but in every way as powerful as Hunger or Transformation when present."

Jael cants his head to the side, struck by a sudden thought.

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Hunger, yes. The endless
seeking to fill the void within us, to strive for more. What, though, is
present when one achieves a goal, when that brief satiation ceases the Hunger
within oneself? The cycle is never paused, never ended. The satisfaction of
Hunger is only gained through Consumption."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Just as the Legion gains
power from His own Consumptions - souls, Elder Gods, and Divinely-infused
hearts alike - so may we. That which one Hungers for, when obtained, becomes a
part of oneself. It strengthens, it satiates, and it grants a measure of power.
One occurrence of this marvel is hardly enough, and soon enough the Hunger will
resume, and lead into another cycle of Consumption and further Hunger. The path
to rise is riddled with many forks, but Consumption of a long-sought goal speeds
the ascension, fortifies the soul, and paves the way for even further
greatness."

Jael pauses, chest rising and falling with exertion as he lowers his arms, a
maddened glint within his eyes and a crooked smirk upon his mouth.

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "This is not enough."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "To Hunger, to be
Transformed and Evolved, to bear witness to Inspiration and to Consume - all
are exceedingly powerful, and all have the capability to bring immeasurable
power and unstoppable tenacity. However, in the final tenet, the very essence
of Lord Morgfyre must be called to attention."

Jael raises his hands, splayed into contorted claws, and gestures widely with a
vicious swipe. The gleaming Ouroboros above explodes in a torrent of black
miasma that hangs in a tenebrous haze throughout the chamber. From within the
darkened depths of the unnatural mist, half-formed shapes lurk and swim through
the air, and faint gibbering laughter permeates the atmosphere.

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Each of these tenets is
made obvious within the great Lord Legion, but His very existence forms the
foundation of one ultimate precept: that of Chaos."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Order is the bane of
Transformation, the balk of Hunger, and the stagnation of Inspiration. Through
a measured, routine society, one may well be next to powerless if inimicable
situations are left to their own devices for overlong. Chaos and dischord,
then, must be employed to begin each cycle once more."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "As agents of this Chaos, is
it not our duty to bring the very semblance of our Lord into being, that Order
shall break asunder? The Order that is the bane of all we strive for may be
stricken irreparably with this single act. An unpredictable assault, a clever
misdirection, or a mere act of mischief could well be all that is required to
open the way for further allowance of the spreading of Lord Morgfyre's will.
Rampant Chaos may suit, but a subtle act with precise timing can be far more
effective than the largest show of dischord. Timing is everything."

Jael takes a breath, composing himself from his fervor, and gestures, allowing
the black mist to dissipate into nothingness.

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "As I said, my own life has
been changed. To serve, to pray, to preach - these are all laudable, but we
must never forget that the Lord's will must be introduced into the Basin and
its inhabitants whenever the opportunity arises or may be created. We are
transformed and empowered by Lord Morgfyre, and become the spreaders of Chaos
to better serve Him in all aspects."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "It has been said that
actions speak louder than words. Strengthened thus by Lord Legion, we shall
make a truth of that. Live by His grace and His precepts, and may each of you
Hunger, Transform, Evolve, Consume, and be Inspired. Go forth and use Chaos to
make a mockery of those who would thwart you."

Impresario Jael d'Murani, of Vitriolic Verse says, "Praise be to Lord Morgfyre,
for by His will, we flourish, and in turn make His desires manifest through our
actions and His guidance. Ever lives the Legion, and ever shall we serve."
