Solstice Eve by Krackenor

Runner Up for May 2008

'Twas the eve afore Solstice
And throughout Celest
The mood was quite joyous
As the sun sank in the west.

In a nondescript barrack
Near the pool filled with Stars
Stood a venerable Paladin
His body covered in scars

As he hung up his axe
And prepared for his sleep
He thought of his deeds
And of the honours he’d reap

His mind lingered fondly
Of events this past day
Of all the Pupils beheaded
Of all the Grunts done away

Warmed by such thoughts
On this cold Solstice Eve
Sleep o'ertook our brave warrior,
A well-earned reprieve.

He dreamed of the battle
Of the screams and the cries
His axe swung through the air
Blood flew through the skies.

At last it was done
It did not take long
But the Paladin frowned
For something felt wrong

'Aha!' cried the warrior
As he tilted his head,
For with movement quite swift
One Urth had fled

The Paladin gave chase
Through swamps and o'er seas
Yet no matter how fast he ran
It was like chasing a breeze

After what seemed like hours
The soldier did stop
But when he glanced all around
He was hopelessly lost

At that exact moment
In a city much Changed
A Dreamer awoke
With a look quite deranged

A sickening grin on his face
At the vengeance obtained
His victim never to wake
In the dream would he remain

A brief thought was spared
For his murdered kin
To the Earth she had returned
Though a short life it had been

The Dreamer shook his head
This was no time to grieve
There was work yet to be done
On this Solstice Eve.
