The Masquerade by Alysi
Merit for September 2008
Watch how they dance -
Enticing their malice on toes of desire
And without second glance
They create their own Chance
And engulf their burning fires.
Watch how they hover -
Dresses flying across the cracks
The dark secrets they cover
With the lips of a lover
And a bloody knife â€" stabbing backs.
Watch how they leap -
Driving further to succeed
Misplaced souls to take and reap
Enemies lost in eternal sleep
Thanks to Avarice and Greed.
Watch how they sway -
To a music bred by the Taint
The weak are their prey
They the potters, you the clay;
You the sinners, He the Saint.
Watch how they swing -
Controlling their Hate ever wiser
Striking as a hornet’s sting
Bound by oath like marriage ring
Hoarding conflict â€" the gruesome miser.
Watch how they turn -
Eyes speaking words the floor can’t hear
Failure causes them to burn
Destruction born from false concern
Sounding far away, they are quite near.
Watch how they bow -
To their neighbor’s rich cloak
As they mutter their vow
And wipe the sweat from your brow
With the edge of a knife in a single clean stoke.
Watch how they spin -
Whirling around in their glorious task
Power stemming from deep within
The Engine turns, here it begins
Who are they you ask?
Just watch the red masks…
