A Simple Gift by Finnley
Runner Up for October 2009
A simple gift is all they wish,
as they flit and fly about.
Sprites do love a Mother's leaf,
and hate it when you shout.
With thankful heart I took but four
and drifted through the grove.
To seek out those who'd wandered far,
from mother's caring love.
We met beside a waterfall;
the first of those I sought.
And with a wink a leaf I gave
her trust I now had bought.
Three more were found and offered gifts,
our comp'ny grew to five.
Our steps were light and filled with glee
again I felt alive.
We danced among the hornbeam trees
as moon beams filled the air.
When suddenly I saw a sight
that gave my heart a tear.
"Oh my!" they said.
"Oh why!" I cried.
"There's nothing we can do."
I could not speak, but only weep
to see the flame was through.
My sight was blurred, I could not think
when arms wrapped round me so.
A gentle loving voice sounded as
I nestled in her glow.
Mother Moon had sensed me grieve
and she whispered in my ears.
"It won't stay out forever for
it has burned for years.
So dry your eyes sweet Childe of mine,
just cast away your fears.
For Serenwild shall rise again
and Gloms will shed the tears."
A simple gift she gave to me
the Mother in the moon.
Once more may I wear smiles again,
for Flame will burn quite soon.
